Short answer

Most Bali holidays need the visa on arrival, an official fee of IDR 500,000 (about AUD 40) for 30 days and extendable once for 30 more, bought online as an e-VOA (electronic visa on arrival) before you fly. Longer stays, remote work and a second home each have their own visa, all applied for through immigration's own channels.[1]

Apply only through immigration's own channels: its sites, an Indonesian embassy for the C1, or the airport bank counter for a paper visa on arrival. Do these in order.

  1. Check whether you need a visa at all

Nineteen countries and territories, most of them in Southeast Asia, can stay up to 30 days without a visa. That stay cannot be extended. Australians, Britons, Americans and EU citizens are not on the list. The visa-free entry guide lists every one.[4, 5]

  2. Pick the visa that fits your stay

Up to 60 days is the visa on arrival with its one extension. Up to six months takes the C1 visit visa, IDR 1 million (about AUD 80) for 60 days and extendable to 180. The visa types guide sets the main visas side by side, with their stay and official fee, from a holiday to a job.[6]

  3. Apply for the e-VOA a week before you fly

Apply on evisa.imigrasi.go.id or indonesiavoa.vfsevisa.id and pay by card. You need a passport valid for six months, a photo and a ticket out; the document list asks for no bank statement. The visa on arrival guide sets out how much the Bali visa on arrival costs and the steps, and the bank statement guide covers which visas do ask for one.[1, 2]

  4. Extend once, from inside Indonesia, if you stay on

Apply from day 16 of your stay, counting the day you land as day one, which is the earliest offices accept, and aim to finish a week before it ends. You register and upload your files on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, then go to the immigration office for a photo and a short interview, so keep a morning free. The visa extension guide sets out each step.[10, 11]

  5. Leave before your stay runs out

Each day over costs IDR 1 million (about AUD 80), paid in cash rupiah at the airport as you leave. Past 60 days there is no fine: you are detained and deported. The overstay fine guide covers what happens at the desk.[12]

Staying longer takes a stay permit, called a KITAS (limited stay permit). The E33G remote worker visa costs IDR 7 million (about AUD 561) for a year and asks for at least USD 60,000 a year from an employer abroad. The second home visa lets you stay up to five years with USD 130,000 in a state bank, or a USD 1 million apartment. The KITAS guide, the digital nomad visa guide and the second home visa guide set out each one.[7, 8]

The visa on arrival is IDR 500,000 (about AUD 40) today. A rise to IDR 750,000 (about AUD 60) online and IDR 1 million (about AUD 80) at the airport was announced on 12 August 2026, with no start date, so check the fee on immigration's visa page before you pay. If the rise starts, the e-VOA online is the cheaper route; the visa on arrival guide tracks it. These are immigration's official fees, paid direct; a visa agent charges its own fee on top.[1, 3, 13]

Look-alike visa sites can sit above the real one in search results and take your payment just as the real one does. A payment that goes through proves nothing.[9]

Type the official address yourself instead of following an ad or a search result.

The visa on arrival guide shows how to tell the real site from a copy.
