Short answer

Canggu suits surf, beach days and eating out more than sights and culture. A booked car or Grab from the airport costs IDR 200,000 to 300,000 (about AUD 16), so book before you land.[5]

In detail

Start where your plans sit:

Is Canggu worth visiting?

Yes, if you come for surf, beaches, restaurants and the expat lifestyle. It is less a place for sights and culture. Its luxury restaurants cost far less than their Western equivalents.[19]

A nice mid-range dinner is about IDR 150,000 to 200,000 a person.[25]

Our rule

Come to Canggu for the beaches, surf and restaurants, and go to Ubud for sights and culture.

Where is Canggu, and which part suits you?

Canggu is a village in North Kuta, a district of Badung regency.[1]

It is 9 km from Seminyak.[2]

The nearest airport is Ngurah Rai, about 18 to 20 km away by road.[3]

The character changes from one part of the coast to the next.[23]

PartCharacter
BerawaPolished, beach-club heavy
Batu BolongBuzzing, lively, trendy
Echo BeachChilled, surf-focused
PererenanQuieter, rice fields, boutique
UmalasResidential, leafy

Batu Bolong is a walkable cafe hub best for beginner surfers, and Echo Beach suits experienced surfers.[17]

Check what is next door before you book near the beach in Berawa, because beach-club music can carry into homes there.[14, 15]

Noise is rarely a problem unless you stay close to a beach club, bar or club, and construction and temple noise are the commoner disturbances.[34]

Our rule

Pick Echo Beach if you surf with experience, Batu Bolong if you are a beginner or want a lively evening, and Umalas or Pererenan for quiet nights.

Pererenan or Canggu: which is better?

Pererenan is the quieter choice, with rice fields and boutique stays; where to stay in Canggu compares it with Berawa and Seseh.[23]

Canggu or Seminyak: which is better?

Choose Seminyak for shopping, dining and nightlife, and Canggu for surf and a social, nomad scene.[26, 27]

The drive between them takes 45 minutes by car at midday and 1.5 hours at 17:00. A scooter takes 20 minutes at midday and 35 at 17:00.[6]

The Berawa main strip and the Canggu to Seminyak road are often jammed in the late afternoon.[6]

Our rule

Move between Canggu and Seminyak at midday, not in the late afternoon.

Canggu or Ubud: which is better?

Choose Ubud for temples, rice terraces and a slower pace, and Canggu for surf beaches and beach bars.[28]

Ubud is a long drive from Canggu: 75 to 95 minutes at midday (10:00 to 13:30 WITA) and 100 to 130 minutes at the sunset peak (16:30 to 19:30).[7]

Read the Ubud guide for the other side of the comparison.

Our rule

Go to Ubud for culture and plan on 75 to 130 minutes each way.

Canggu or Uluwatu: which is better?

Uluwatu is a longer drive still: 1 hour 45 minutes at midday (11:00 to 14:00) and 2.5 to 3+ hours in the afternoon peak (15:00 to 18:00), so avoid leaving Canggu after about 14:30 to 15:00.[8]

Read the Uluwatu guide for what is there.

Our rule

Leave Canggu for Uluwatu before 14:30, or stay the night.

Canggu or Sanur: which is better?

Choose Sanur for calm water and young children, and Canggu for surf. Sanur's shore has calm waves, safe for swimming and play, while none of Canggu's beaches is naturally calm.[16, 29]

Sanur is 22 km from Canggu, a drive of 1 to 1.5 hours.[4]

Our rule

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours between Canggu and Sanur, and treat Sanur as a separate stay or a harbour stop.

How much does Canggu cost a night?

A simple private guesthouse or homestay room with its own bathroom costs about IDR 250,000 to 400,000 (about AUD 20) a night.[30]

The where to stay guide has the other room prices, and where to live in Bali covers a month.

Our rule

Budget IDR 250,000 to 400,000 a night for a simple room.

What day trips can you take from Canggu?

Ubud and Uluwatu are long drives, with the times above under Canggu or Ubud and Canggu or Uluwatu; the guides for Ubud and Uluwatu say what is there.

For Nusa Penida, drive to Sanur harbour (1 to 1.5 hours, above) and take a fast boat of about 45 minutes. Read Nusa Penida and the fast boat guide first.[9]

Tanah Lot is 15 km away, about 30 to 45 minutes by car or scooter.[22]

How do you get to Canggu?

A booked car or Grab from the airport costs about IDR 200,000 to 300,000, slightly under the sellers' IDR 350,000.[5]

The drive takes 45 minutes to over 2 hours, and 16:00 to 19:00 WITA is usually the worst traffic of the day.[4]

The getting to Canggu guide has the routes and the app-pickup tip.

What is there to do in Canggu?

Beaches, surf and restaurants lead. A beginner surf lesson costs IDR 400,000 a person, equipment and coaching included, for up to 2 hours.[18] The things to do guide has the rest.

Where should you stay in Canggu?

Stay at Echo Beach to surf, Batu Bolong for cafes and Pererenan for quiet; a simple room starts at about IDR 250,000 a night.[30]

Two to three nights suit a first visit.[31] The where to stay guide compares the parts and prices a first visit.

Canggu weather: when to go, and when it floods

Canggu is wet from November to March: nearby Denpasar has 20 rain days in January against one each in August and September.[21]

This wet season is forecast to start in parts of Bali in November 2026 and most of the island in December, and to peak in February 2027.[21]

In heavy rain, check the road before you ride. In September 2025 water in a Berawa lane reached about 1 metre, and the main road linking Denpasar, Kerobokan and Canggu went under.[32, 33]

With children on a rainy day, cafes, spas and other indoor options fill the time.[20]

Our rule

Book April to October for the fewest rain days, and check the forecast before you ride in the wet months.

Is Canggu safe?

Mostly, with a few things to plan for: the sea, the road, heavy rain and bag snatchers.

The waves can be strong and the currents unpredictable, and none of the beaches is naturally calm, so do not count on a calm patch for children or weak swimmers.[16]

Carry a motorcycle licence and a permit valid for your country; the rule differs by issuing country, so read the scooter licence guide.[11]

Police run regular licence checks on tourists on scooters in Canggu.[12, 13]

Streets can flood in heavy rain; see the weather section above.

Riders on passing motorbikes sometimes snatch bags and phones, so carry a bag across the body on the side away from the road.[35, 36]

In an emergency, call the direct line: ambulance 118 or 119, police 110.[37]

Our rule

Swim only where you can see the surf is manageable, and sort your scooter licence and permit before you fly.
