Start where your plans sit:

Where should you live in Bali as an expat?

Live where the rent fits: in Canggu a one-bedroom villa runs about IDR 20 to 30 million a month and a loft IDR 15 to 25 million in October 2026, Ubud about 10 to 15 percent cheaper and Uluwatu about 10 to 15 percent dearer. Seminyak and Sanur use listed asking prices read on 18 October 2026, whose medians usually run above what renters pay, and Sanur's rest on three listings, too few to rank. Much cheaper deals exist if you wait, stay in a kos or homestay, or rent by the year.[1, 2]

A lean month for one person in a one-bedroom runs from about IDR 26 million (about AUD 2,080) in Ubud to IDR 31 million in Uluwatu, and about IDR 34 million on Sanur's three listings. A remote worker's month, with a monthly desk, runs from about IDR 38 million to IDR 49 million.[1, 3]

Converted at Indonesia's tax reference rate for the week of 21 October 2026.[28]
A one-bedroom month by area, one person, in IDR jt (jt = million), our estimates; villa rents of October 2026 in Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu, listed asking prices read 18 October 2026 in Seminyak and Sanur
AreaLean month (low end of the rent)Remote month (middle of the rent)
Canggu28.840.2
Seminyak, listed asking prices27.549.4
Ubud26.338.0
Uluwatu31.344.3
Sanur, listed asking prices, three listings33.840.9

The lean month adds the same everyday lines to each area's rent, power and home internet among them. Furnished and unfurnished places are both common, and cleaning, pool and garden care are included or billed separately, listing by listing. Drop those lines if your rent covers them. The rents behind each area, and every line of the month, are on the cost of living page.[22, 23]

Treat a small gap between two areas as noise. Ubud, Canggu and Sanur sit within about IDR 3 million of each other on the remote month, so the airport and the street should decide between them.

How far is each area from the airport?

Seminyak is the closest area to Ngurah Rai airport (I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport), about 10 km by road, and Ubud the farthest, about 38 km.[4]

Road distance to Ngurah Rai airport from each area's centre, our measurement, October 2026
AreaBy road to the airport
Seminyak10 km
Sanur16 km
Canggu20 km
Uluwatu21 km
Ubud38 km

Distance is only half of the trip. The time moves with the traffic at the hour you travel, so ride the route once before a lease ties you to it.

Which area of Bali is best for families with children?

Canggu and Sanur, if school decides it: their districts hold the most international-partner school licences, called SPK (joint-cooperation schools). Counting one licence per school level, Sanur's district has 14 and Canggu's 13, while Seminyak's district and Ubud's have none. Most of those sit in Renon and Kerobokan, not in the beach areas themselves: Sanur has 4, Tibubeneng, Canggu's village, has 4, and Pecatu, Uluwatu's village, has none.[5]

International-partner (SPK) school licences by district, one per school level, primary to high school, national school register, 18 October 2026

Kuta UtaraCanggu, Kerobokan, Umalas13
Kuta SelatanJimbaran, Ungasan, Pecatu (Uluwatu)4

UbudUbud0

A school across a district line can still be the nearer one, so measure the ride from your street, not the district. Sanur's water is calm along the shore too, gentler for small children than Canggu's surf.[5, 8]

Our rule

Ask each school for its fees and a place for your child before you choose the street.

A licence count shows where schools are, not whether one has room or fits your budget.

Is Canggu a good place to live?

Yes, if you want a wide range of restaurants, amenities and leisure and can live with the bustle: Canggu is beautiful, but business and traffic keep growing, and the hustle and bustle is not for everyone.[24]

A one-bedroom villa runs about IDR 20 million (about AUD 1,600) to IDR 30 million a month and a loft IDR 15 to 25 million. Desks start lowest here, from IDR 1.5 million a month in October 2026, and a remote worker's month comes to about IDR 40 million, close to Ubud's. Minimum terms vary by listing, and Pererenan's ask for three or six months.[1, 2, 3]

Canggu's coast is a run of six main surf spots, Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach among them. Berawa's waves suit intermediate surfers, with gentler stretches for beginners, and May to October is the usual best season.[6]

Traffic is the trade-off. The Canggu shortcut road can't be widened, and a one-way system is planned to ease the jams.[12, 13]

Visit the street at night before you sign near the beach: music and fireworks from beach clubs can carry into homes in Canggu and Berawa, and residents have complained of both. The venues agreed in 2022 to keep outdoor music to 70 decibels and close by 01:00.[9, 10, 24]

Noise is rarely a problem unless you live close to a beach club, bar or club; construction and temple noise are the commoner disturbances, part and parcel of the island now.[24]

Local drivers sometimes refuse Grab and Gojek pickups at Echo Beach, so walk to the main road before you order, or book the ride home. Day and month prices for gyms around Canggu, Berawa and Pererenan are on the gym prices page.[17]

Canggu or Seminyak: which is better to live in?

Seminyak is closer to the airport, about 10 km by road against Canggu's 20 km. On listed asking prices, a Seminyak one-bedroom starts from about IDR 18.8 million, against about IDR 16.9 million for Canggu's lowest listing, an apartment, and its median is about IDR 33.8 million, against IDR 26.6 million for Canggu's.[1, 2, 4]

That median shows in the month: a remote worker pays about IDR 49 million (about AUD 3,930), the highest of the five areas on listed asking prices. A lean Seminyak month, built on the lowest listing, comes to about IDR 27.5 million. For a gym near Seminyak, Kuta or Legian, compare the gym prices.[2, 3]

Our rule

Choose Seminyak to be near the airport, and budget from its median rent, the remote-month column, not its lowest listing.

Its lean month sits about IDR 1 million below Canggu's only because it rests on the lowest listing; on the median it is the dearest area, so the saving there is time on the airport road, not rent.

Canggu or Ubud: which is better to live in?

Ubud wins on rent and peace, Canggu on the airport and the cheaper desk. Ubud's rent runs about 10 to 15 percent below Canggu's, roughly IDR 17.5 million (about AUD 1,400) to IDR 26 million for a one-bedroom villa against IDR 20 to 30 million, our estimate. Ubud is the farthest area from the airport, about 38 km by road, nearly twice Canggu's distance.[1, 4]

The desk narrows the gap. Ubud's monthly desk starts from about IDR 2.5 million in October 2026, against Canggu's 1.5 million, so a remote worker's month comes to about IDR 38 million in Ubud and IDR 40 million in Canggu.[1, 3]

Ubud's jams are in the town itself, with traffic lights, rerouting and a central car park recommended to ease them. No SPK school sits in the Ubud district, so families start with the Abiansemal row of the schools table.[5, 15]

A kos, a rented room in a shared building, is the cheaper way in: about IDR 3.5 to 4.4 million a month for a foreigner in Ubud, about 12.5 percent less than Canggu, our estimate. Six Ubud listings in October 2026 ran IDR 1.8 to 5.5 million, and most listings sit lower than that estimate. Ubud also has its own section on the vegan restaurants list.[1, 27]

Ubud's draw is its peace and natural beauty.[24]

Canggu or Uluwatu: which is better to live in?

Uluwatu's rent runs about 10 to 15 percent above Canggu's, roughly IDR 22.5 million (about AUD 1,800) to IDR 34 million for a one-bedroom villa, our estimate. A remote worker's month comes to about IDR 44 million against Canggu's IDR 40 million.[1, 3]

Uluwatu's surf is for the experienced: powerful Indian Ocean waves, consistent almost all year, and at Suluban, waves for intermediate to expert surfers. In June 2026 Badung barred cars from one westbound stretch of Jalan Uluwatu from 14:00 to 22:00, so drive in the morning or let a car meet you east of the junction; motorcycles could still use it.[7, 14]

The airport settles nothing between them: Canggu is about 20 km away by road and Uluwatu about 21 km. Rent does the deciding. Saunas and ice baths around Uluwatu and the rest of the Bukit, Bali's southern peninsula, are on the recovery list.[4]

Canggu or Sanur: which is better to live in?

Sanur's listed asking prices rest on three listings, all from about IDR 25 million, too few to rank it against Canggu: one new villa moves the figures. On those three, a lean month comes to about IDR 34 million (about AUD 2,720) and a remote worker's month about IDR 41 million, close to Canggu's IDR 40 million.[2, 3]

Denpasar does not want beach clubs in Sanur, to keep the area's character. Its water is calm along the shore, where Canggu's is surf.[8, 11]

Sanur is the closer of the two to the airport, about 16 km by road against Canggu's 20 km. App pickups at its port can be hard to get, as at Echo Beach: in late 2024 app rides dropped riders there but did not collect them, so book the ride from the harbour.[4, 16]

Which areas of Bali flood in the rainy season?

Bali's urban streets can flood badly in torrential rain or storms, and Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud and Sanur have all had floods since December 2024. No flood report names Uluwatu, but ask the owner about drainage there too. This wet season is forecast to start in parts of Bali in November 2026 and most of the island in December. It peaks in February 2027.[18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25]

  • Canggu: among the places flooded on 10 September 2025.
  • Ubud: waist-deep water on 10 September 2025.
  • Sanur: 50 cm of water on the bypass road in February 2026.

A viewing in the dry months shows none of this, so ask the owner and a neighbour how the street fared in the last heavy rain before you sign. Streets along the Mati River through Kuta, Legian and Seminyak are among those that can flood after a few days of heavy rain, waist-deep on one hotel road in 2024.[21, 24]

Our rule

Take a monthly let through the first rains before you pay for a year.

A month is far cheaper to walk away from than a year.

What should you check before you choose an area?

Check seven things on the street itself, not the area's name. Each one takes a visit or a message, and together they settle most of what the tables above can't.

  • The rent on your street, against the area's rent in the tables above.
  • The minimum term, if you want to try the area for a month first.
  • The ride to the airport, at the hour you fly.
  • The ride to your desk or gym, at the hour you ride it.
  • Whether Grab and Gojek can pick you up at the gate.
  • How the street fared in the last heavy rain, asked of the owner and a neighbour.
  • How loud the street is after dark, on a weeknight and on a weekend.

FAQ

Where should you live in Bali for a month?

For a month, start with a kos or guesthouse room: for a foreigner it runs from IDR 4 to 5 million a month in Canggu, lower in Ubud and higher in Uluwatu, and cheaper deals usually sit 15 to 20 minutes' drive from the centres.[1]

Listings in October 2026 ran about IDR 0.5 to 6 million in and around Canggu, the bottom of that range a shared room, and from about IDR 1.8 million in Ubud, on six listings; most listings sit lower than the foreigner's price.[26, 27]

Villa agency listings set their own minimum term, from one month to a year, and some Pererenan listings ask for three or six months, so check each one's minimum.[2]
