How much is the overstay fine in Bali?

Each day past the end of your permit costs IDR 1 million (about AUD 80), for an overstay of up to 60 days. It is the same on every visa and stay permit, not only the visa on arrival.[1, 2]

Bali deports overstayers: 342 foreigners were deported from the island in the first half of 2026, mainly for misusing a stay permit or overstaying.[7]

What does an overstay cost, day by day?

The fine adds up fast: a month over costs IDR 30 million (about AUD 2,400). The table works it out at IDR 1 million a day.[1, 8]

1IDR 1,000,00080
3IDR 3,000,000240
7IDR 7,000,000560
30IDR 30,000,0002,400

Is the overstay fine for 30 or 60 days?

The daily fine runs for an overstay of up to 60 days, so a 45-day overstay is a fine, not deportation. Some older pages online still give 30 days; plan on 60.[2, 5, 6]

How do you pay the overstay fine when you leave?

You pay on your way out, so the cash has to be ready before you reach the airport. If you are staying on with a new visa, you pay at an immigration office when you apply instead.[2]

  1. Count your days over

Count every day after your last legal day, and carry IDR 1 million (about AUD 80) in cash for each.[2]

  2. Get the cash in rupiah

Draw rupiah in town before you set off. Officers at the airport take cash in rupiah only, not cards or dollars.[2]

  3. Pay at the airport as you leave

Pay the immigration officers at the airport when you leave the country. Arriving with only a card or dollars leaves you unable to pay there.[2]

What happens if you overstay more than 60 days?

Past 60 days there is no fine to pay. You are held at the nearest immigration office, questioned, and deported once the paperwork is done.[2, 5]

You pay for the deportation flight, or your sponsor does if you have one, and a friend or family member can book it for you. You can also be banned from returning, usually for six months and up to ten years. Lifting a ban costs IDR 90 million (about AUD 7,210).[1, 2, 4, 6]

Our rule

If you are close to 60 days over, pay and leave before day 61.

The daily fine still covers day 60; from day 61 there is no fine to pay, only detention and deportation.[1][5]

What if you cannot pay the overstay fine?

An unpaid fine leads to the same end as a long overstay: deportation and a ban on returning. Lifting a ban after an unpaid fine costs the same IDR 90 million (about AUD 7,210).[1, 4, 6]

Keep enough for the fine and a flight home. A visitor who cannot pay can be held in detention in Denpasar until deported.[4]

Our rule

Short of money, contact your embassy early.

It cannot pay deportation costs, but it can contact your family or friends for you.[2]

Can the overstay fine be waived?

Sometimes, and immigration decides each case. The fee may be set at zero for a foreigner who is:[1]

  • unable to pay, while in Indonesia
  • caught by force majeure
  • in hospital for mental illness
  • in Indonesia for a deportation
  • in the hands of law enforcement
  • carrying out a court ruling

The regulation lets the fee be set at zero in these cases; it does not say how to ask, and visitors who could not pay have been deported. If you are in hospital or detained when your visa ends, contact immigration before it runs out, not after.[3, 4]

How do you avoid an overstay?

Extend before your stay ends, or leave by its final day. Your stay counts from your arrival date: land on 1 March on a visa on arrival, and by our reading your last legal day is 30 March.[9]

UK government guidance says that if you extend after the visa has run out, the overstay days come off your new stay, so a late extension also shortens your trip; sources differ on whether a late extension is accepted at all. The steps and the safe window are under extending a visa on arrival.[2]

Sources disagree

Can you still extend a visa on arrival once your stay has run out?

Our reading

Apply between day 16 and day 23 of a 30-day stay. A late extension, with the overstay days taken off the new stay, is in UK guidance but on no Bali immigration office page, and one office turns applications away in the last seven days; if you are already past day 23, ask the immigration office before you count on it, and expect the overstay fine of IDR 1 million a day.

VX3 is the Manado office's own page; the Bali office page (VX5) gives no dates. OS1 is the UK government's guidance, older and not specific to Bali.

  • An extension is applied for at the earliest 14 days after arrival and at the latest 7 days before the stay permit ends.[10]

  • If you apply for an extension of stay, any period of overstay is deducted from your new visa: overstay 5 days on a 30-day visa and get a 25-day extension.[2]

Our rule

Put your last legal day in your phone the day you land.

One forgotten day costs IDR 1 million (about AUD 80).
