Short answer

Ubud, 38 km by road from the airport, suits first-timers who want temples, rice terraces and a slow pace, and it has no beach. The drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours, so book the car before you land.[2]

In detail

Is Ubud worth visiting?

Yes for first-timers who want culture and nature, couples, wellness seekers and long stays; no for anyone who came for beach days. Ubud sits inland among rice terraces, river gorges and temples, with dance shows and art markets in the evenings.[7, 8]

First-timers and culture fans: the temples, the dance and the terraces are the draw, and the evenings are calm.[7, 8]

Couples: Sayan, a short drive outside the centre, suits couples looking for a quiet jungle escape.[18]

Wellness and slow travel: yoga and retreats are the stronger scene here than on the coast.[9]

Families: Ubud offers space, nature and gentle adventure rather than beach days.[7]

Long stays: one-bedroom villas list from about IDR 19 million (about AUD 1,520) to IDR 40 million a month, with a median near IDR 24 million, in October 2026. See where to live in Bali.[11]

The centre's roads jam.[12]

Our rule

Come for the culture and the green, and plan the town's traffic into every day.

Does Ubud have a beach?

No. Ubud is inland, about an hour's drive from the nearest beaches, and swimming here means a waterfall or your hotel pool.[9]

Ubud or Seminyak or Canggu: which suits you?

Ubud is the inland, quiet choice, Seminyak the stylish beach one and Canggu the surf and social one.[7, 9, 10]

Ubud is the cheaper month: its median one-bedroom listing is about IDR 24 million, against about IDR 27 million in Canggu.[11]

Ubud is also the farthest from the airport. The drive to Canggu takes 75 to 95 minutes at midday and 100 to 130 minutes in the evening peak.[4]

Seminyak takes 1.5 to 2 hours.[8]

Ubud is spread out, so you will usually need a driver or a scooter with the right licence to move between places, where the Canggu centre is compact.[9]

Our rule

On a week or more, split the stay between the coast and Ubud instead of commuting between them.

Many first-timers do.[7]

What is the weather in Ubud, and when should you go?

Ubud is dry from April to October and wet from November to March, and June to September are the best months. Sitting in the highlands, it runs a couple of degrees cooler, especially at night and in the rain, and showers are more likely than in Kuta.[13]

Days run about 26 to 30 degrees and evenings about 20 to 23 degrees all year. The wet season brings heavy but short rain, often in the afternoon or evening, and much higher humidity.[13]

This year rain is forecast to reach parts of Bali in November 2026 and most of it in December, peaking in February 2027.[14]

Our rule

Book June to September for the driest days, and carry a light rain jacket in any month.

How do you get to Ubud?

How to get to Ubud: a fixed fare from the airport is IDR 350,000 (about AUD 28) a car each way, for a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours. A car on to Seminyak or Canggu is about IDR 400,000 (about AUD 32) to 600,000.[2, 19]

Getting a ride inside the centre is the practical snag. App pickups in central Ubud are often restricted by local transport groups, so the driver asks you to walk a few minutes to meet them. Pre-book your transfer, or walk out of the centre before you request a car.[15, 16]

What is there to do in Ubud?

Things to do in Ubud: the Campuhan Ridge Walk is free, while the Monkey Forest costs adults IDR 130,000 and Tirta Empul IDR 75,000.[5, 6, 22]

Where should you stay in Ubud?

Where to stay in Ubud: the centre is the easy base on foot, while Sayan and Kedewatan are 10 to 20 minutes away by car.[17]

How long should you stay in Ubud?

Two or three days suit a relaxed visit, and one full day is the minimum.[26] Wellness and long stays run longer; where to stay in Ubud covers a month.

What day trips can you take from Ubud?

Three trips work from Ubud: the Mount Batur sunrise trek, Jatiluwih's rice terraces and Nusa Penida. A shared Batur trek with hotel pickup starts from IDR 450,000 (about AUD 36) a person for two or more in June 2026, a seller's quote, and the Mount Batur trek guide has the rest.[23]

Jatiluwih is about 40 km and 1.5 hours from Ubud. For Nusa Penida, a car to Sanur harbour takes about an hour and costs about IDR 275,000 (about AUD 22) to 375,000 across sellers, then a fast boat; read Nusa Penida and the fast boat guide first.[20, 21, 24]

Uluwatu is a transfer rather than a day trip: the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours and a car is about IDR 650,000 (about AUD 52) to 675,000 at fixed-fare sellers. See Uluwatu for what is there.[19, 25]

Is Ubud safe?

Mostly, with four things to plan for: the monkeys, the roads, the dark and bag snatchers.

At the Monkey Forest, keep food, drink and plastic bags out, and small items out of sight. A bite is treated at the sanctuary's first-aid clinic; read what to do after a rabies exposure.[28]

Motorbike accidents in Bali have risen sharply, some fatal, and roads outside the centre are dark, with patchy street lighting. Ride only with the right licence, and book a driver after dark.[21, 27]

Bag snatching is often reported in Bali, so carry a bag across the body, away from the road.[27]

In an emergency, call the direct line: ambulance 118 or 119, police 110.[29]

Our rule

Leave food and loose items at the hotel for the Monkey Forest, and book a driver for any trip after dark.
