Short answer

You can extend a Bali visa on arrival once, for 30 more days and an official fee of IDR 500,000 (about AUD 40), to 60 days in all. The earliest you can apply is day 16, and a week before your stay ends (day 23) is the sensible latest: register on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, then keep a morning free for the immigration office.[3]

In detail

Can you extend a visa on arrival in Bali?

Yes, once, from inside Indonesia. Whichever way you bought it, you register online and then visit an immigration office for a photo and an interview; a visa on arrival bought at the airport counter needs one extra first step online.[1, 6]

Either way there is no second extension. Before the 60 days run out, you leave Indonesia or move to another permit.[1]

How much does a Bali visa extension cost?

Extending a visa on arrival costs IDR 500,000 (about AUD 40). A C1 visit visa costs IDR 1 million (about AUD 80) for each 60-day extension. These are immigration's official fees, paid direct; a visa agent charges its own fee on top.[1, 3, 4, 9, 10]

C1 visit visa60 daysTwiceIDR 1,000,000 each

These are the government's fees, paid as your application directs. The fees and fines table lists every official immigration charge, dated.

When should you apply for the extension?

Apply between day 16 and day 23 of your 30 days, counting the day you land as day one. Day 16 is the earliest offices accept, 14 days before your stay ends. Aim to be done a week before it ends, so an office closure or a public holiday does not push you into the fine. The in-person photo and interview are required either way.[3, 6]

Land on 1 March, and you apply from 16 March to 23 March; your 30 days end on 30 March. Applying in your first two weeks is too early, and an e-VOA is best not extended just after you arrive.[1, 3, 5]

Our rule

Set a reminder for day 16 on the day you land.

Applying then leaves a week or more of slack for the office visit.

How do you extend an e-VOA online?

You start online, pay, and then go to the immigration office for a photo and a short interview. Have these ready before you begin.[3, 6]

  • Passport valid for more than six months.
  • A colour scan of your ticket home or onward to another country.
  • The address and postal code where you will sleep for the next five days.
  • Time for an office visit in the three days after you pay.
  1. Open the official site and find your e-VOA

Type the address yourself: evisa.imigrasi.go.id, or indonesiavoa.vfsevisa.id, the two official sites. On evisa.imigrasi.go.id, open your application from the find-batch page.[1, 3]

  2. Update your address and upload the files

Enter the address where you will stay for the next five days, with the right postal code. The postal code decides which immigration office you must visit, so check it twice.[3]

  3. Pay the fee

The fee is IDR 500,000 (about AUD 40), paid as your own application directs. Pay only for the application you opened on an official address.[3]

  4. Go to the office for the photo and interview

An email books your photo and interview session. Go within three days of paying, to the office that covers the postal code you entered.[3]

The office visit is required for every stay permit extension, a visa on arrival included. Your postal code decides which office you visit; at the Ngurah Rai immigration office, extensions are served from 08:00 to 11:00 WITA, and photo queue numbers are given out before 11:00.[6]

How do you extend a visa on arrival bought at the airport?

You claim your stay permit online first, then follow the same steps as an e-VOA, office visit included.[3, 6]

  1. Claim your stay permit

Open the stay permit claim page on evisa.imigrasi.go.id and enter your details. Your name then appears in a list.[3]

  2. Choose Extend

Click "Action" beside your name, then "Extend". From here the steps match the e-VOA: address and postal code, files, payment, then the office visit within three days.[3]

What happens if you extend too late?

Every day past your last legal day costs IDR 1 million (about AUD 80). UK government guidance says that if you extend after the stay has run out, the days you overstayed come off your new 30 days, so five days over leaves a 25-day extension; no Bali immigration office page describes that route.[2, 7]

Past day 23 but not yet at day 30? Go to the office and ask: the fine starts after day 30. Past 60 days of overstay there is no fine: you are detained and deported, and you pay for the flight, as set out under the overstay fine.[2, 3, 7]

Our rule

Apply by day 23, not on day 30.

A week in hand covers office closures and public holidays.

Sources disagree

Can you still extend a visa on arrival once your stay has run out?

Our reading

Apply between day 16 and day 23 of a 30-day stay. A late extension, with the overstay days taken off the new stay, is in UK guidance but on no Bali immigration office page, and one office turns applications away in the last seven days; if you are already past day 23, ask the immigration office before you count on it, and expect the overstay fine of IDR 1 million a day.

VX3 is the Manado office's own page; the Bali office page (VX5) gives no dates. OS1 is the UK government's guidance, older and not specific to Bali.

  • An extension is applied for at the earliest 14 days after arrival and at the latest 7 days before the stay permit ends.[3]

  • If you apply for an extension of stay, any period of overstay is deducted from your new visa: overstay 5 days on a 30-day visa and get a 25-day extension.[7]

How do you extend a C1 visit visa?

A C1 visit visa gives 60 days and extends twice, by 60 days each time, to 180 days in all. You apply through your account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, and each extension costs IDR 1 million (about AUD 80), paid in Indonesia.[8, 9]

Each extension also needs a visit to the local immigration office for a photo and an interview, before your current stay ends. If you may need more than 60 days, compare the C1 before you travel; which visa fits sets it beside the others.[9]

FAQ

Can an agent extend your visa for you?

The photo and interview at the immigration office need you there in person.[6]

Can you switch to another visa without leaving Indonesia?

Not directly: immigration's visa on arrival page names a bridging visa (a permit that carries you from one stay permit to the next) to move to another stay permit; ask immigration while your stay is still valid.[1]
