In detail

Where to start depends on your arrival:

What happens when you arrive at Bali airport?

At Ngurah Rai airport (I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport) you pass up to five stops in a fixed order. Only the last one is about a ride. The forms behind most of them have their own guides, linked at each step.[1]

  1. Submit the arrival card, if you haven't yet

There is an All Indonesia counter in the arrivals area for anyone who lands without the arrival card. It is quicker done at home, as the arrival card guide shows.[1]

  2. Get a visa at the visa on arrival counter, if you need one

Need a visa on arrival, but haven't bought the e-VOA (electronic visa on arrival) online? Then you queue at the visa on arrival counter first. The visa on arrival guide has the fee, and free drinking water sits nearby.[1, 2, 12]

  3. Pass immigration, at an e-gate if you can

The e-gates take foreign visitors with an electronic passport and an e-VOA or e-Visa, and they also need your submitted arrival card.[10, 19]

Children aged 14 and under can't use the e-gates; they go to a staffed counter with their parents. What families meet there in practice is in the customs guide.[10]

  4. Collect your bags and show the QR code at customs

After the baggage belts, customs scans the arrival card's QR code at the exit. What to declare is in the customs guide.[1, 19]

  5. Walk out into the arrivals hall

Through the exit you are in international arrivals, with the money changers, the SIM card booths and the ride counters. The levy counter is here too, for anyone who has not paid the tourist levy online.[1, 4, 20]

Have five things ready before the exit doors open:

  • The arrival card's QR code, as a screenshot.
  • The levy voucher, unless you plan to pay at the counter.
  • Your first address, typed into the Grab or Gojek app.
  • Your driver's name and plate, if a hotel driver is meeting you.
  • A way to pay for the ride: a card in the app, or rupiah from the hall.

How do you get from Bali airport to your hotel?

Four kinds of ride leave from just outside international arrivals. You can take the airport taxi, a Grab or Gojek car, a car with driver, or the Trans Metro Dewata bus.[2]

They differ most in when you learn the price. Grab shows the fare before you book and a GoCar booked on the spot adds a location fee, while an airport taxi charges by the meter or a fixed rate, depending on the company.[3, 4, 8, 9]

The table sets out each option. A band is the range of fares listed for that service, not the fare for your trip.[2, 3, 4, 8, 13]

Trans Metro Dewata busThe pick-up zoneE-money card or QRISIDR 4,400 a person

The bus is the cheap one, running to Kuta, Nusa Dua and the Mengwi bus terminal. It takes only an e-money card or QRIS, Indonesia's national QR code, and QRIS from abroad works with apps from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China. Without an Indonesian e-money card or one of those apps, take another ride.[3, 4, 15]

Our rule

Book your ride at a counter, a lounge or before you fly, never with a driver who walks up to you.

Each of those gives you a price or a meter you can check.

How much is a taxi from Bali airport?

The airport's directory lists no fare by area, only a band; transfer companies publish their own, so you can check a price before you land and confirm it when you book. The table sets two sellers' lists side by side.[4, 5, 6]

Sellers' quoted fares from Bali airport, IDR, read 18 October 2026; each column head gives its car and seats
AreaBali Touristic, car for up to 4Kura-Kura Bus, car for up to 3
Kuta and Legian130,000480,000
Jimbaran150,000500,000
Nusa Dua150,000500,000
Seminyak180,000480,000
Sanur200,000500,000
Uluwatu200,000560,000
Canggu350,000560,000
Ubud350,000560,000

These are sellers' quotes, not an official tariff. The higher list asks up to about 3.7 times the lower one for the same area, our estimate, so compare before you book. The lower list includes airport parking but not tolls; the other doesn't say.[6]

To Canggu, a pre-booked car or Grab is about IDR 200,000 to 300,000, under both sellers' lists (IDR 350,000 and IDR 560,000).[21]

The official Ngurah Rai Airport Taxi lists only a band of IDR 120,000 to IDR 1 million a ride. Airport taxis charge by the meter or a fixed rate, depending on the company, and the official one is metered. Its counters are open from 05:00 to 02:00 WITA (Bali time).[3, 4]

For scale, a Grab ride the other way, from central Denpasar to the airport, averages IDR 90,000 to IDR 150,000 for about 13 km.[8]

Neither app publishes a fare from the airport; the app shows yours before you book. A GoCar booked on the spot at the airport carries a location fee on top of the ride, and tolls and parking are extra.[8, 9]

Use a registered taxi company, and check the driver's identity before you get in.[11]

Our rule

For a fixed price, book in the app or with a transfer company; for the meter, use the official counter.

Ignore offers in the hall; if you still take a street car, agree the fare and destination before you get in.

Where is the Grab and Gojek pickup point at Bali airport?

Grab and Gojek have a counter or lounge outside both the international and domestic terminals, where staff help you find the car; book there or in the app.[3, 8, 13, 21]

Gojek bikes are not allowed into the terminal. To get one, walk out of the terminal, cross the multi-lane road and follow the stream of commuters down the alley between the mosque and the bike parking to the Gojek bike pickup point. It suits light luggage.[21]

A standard Grab airport car takes up to four passengers and 60 kg of bags, and GrabBike, the motorbike option, can't pick up at airports.[8]

Get in only once the car's plate and driver match the app: anyone in the hall can say they drive for Grab.[11]

How does a hotel or pre-booked pickup work?

A booked driver typically waits for you in the arrivals area, however late you land. Settle the meeting point, and whether the driver tracks your flight, in writing before you fly.[7] Sellers' fares by area are in the taxi price table.

With nothing booked, you can still hire a car with driver at the counters in the international arrivals lobby. Golden Bird's counter, open 07:00 to 03:00, has a listed band of IDR 200,000 to IDR 500,000; the listing does not say per what.[2, 4]

Should you buy a SIM card at Bali airport?

Only if you need data the moment you land. The Telkomsel booth in international arrivals lists its SIM card packs from IDR 100,000. Telkomsel's own list prices a 30-day pack of 6 GB and a call quota at IDR 55,000 (about AUD 4.4), VAT included.[4, 16]

Telkomsel, Indosat and smartfren all have booths in international arrivals. They open at 04:00 or 05:00 and close at midnight or 02:00.[4]

Airport SIM cards are drastically overpriced: the Telkomsel booth lists packs from IDR 100,000 against the IDR 55,000 pack. They are fine for quick convenience, but minimarts and phone shops outside the airport go much lower, for example HappyCell in Canggu.[4, 16, 21]

At the booth, ask what the price buys, the SIM card, the data and the days, and set it against Telkomsel's published pack price.

Wherever you buy it, you register a local SIM card with your passport and a valid stay permit, so take your passport and visa. On a stay under 90 days, a foreign phone with a local SIM card also needs its IMEI registered at an operator's outlet; the customs guide explains when. On your home SIM card there is nothing to register.[17, 18]

Where can you get cash at Bali airport?

An ATM centre sits in international arrivals before the visa on arrival counter, and five money changers sit in international arrivals, three of them open 24 hours. Most changers take cash only, and Mandiri's counter uses the same rate as the others in the hall.[4]

Skimmers have been found on ATMs in Bali. Pick a machine in a bank's own space over a standalone one, and walk away from a card slot that looks bulky.[14]

Never call a phone number stuck on an ATM: a fake one can be posted there to get your card details.[11]

How much cash to carry, and whether to change it or draw it, is on living in Bali.

How do you avoid airport touts and unofficial drivers?

What you pay depends on who you follow out. Drivers sometimes approach you offering a ride, and some claim to drive for an app.[7, 11]

The official options don't come to you. They sit at a counter or a lounge, and an app car's plate and driver show on your phone before it arrives. The table sets one against the other.[3, 7, 8, 11]

Official rideTout in the hall
Where you meetA counter or an app lounge outside arrivalsThey approach you
The priceShown in the app, or by the meter or a fixed rateOften no fixed fare
Who they areA booking with the plate and the driverSome claim to drive for an app

Running the gauntlet is an Ngurah Rai tradition. Keep walking and the touts lose interest.[21]

Our rule

Say no thanks and keep walking to the counter or the lounge.

If you still take a hall driver, check what Grab or Gojek shows for your destination and agree that fare and the destination before you get in: an app fare is fixed, a hall fare is not.

What if you land at Bali airport late at night?

The taxi, Grab and Gojek counters are open from 05:00 to 02:00, and Golden Bird's car-with-driver counter until 03:00. Three of the money changers in the hall stay open 24 hours.[4]

If you land between 02:00 and 05:00, book your ride before you fly: sources differ on whether taxis run then; see Conflicts.
