In detail

Start where your plans sit:

What is a KITAS?

It is a permit to live here, not to visit. You get it through a limited stay visa: you apply for the visa, and the KITAS is issued when the immigration officer admits you on it. That holds for every visa in the table below.[2, 3, 5, 7]

Every KITAS is tied to a purpose: work, investment, family, retirement, a second home or remote work. Each purpose has its own visa code, such as E33G for remote workers, and its own rules. A KITAP is the longer permit some KITAS holders can move to later.[10]

Which KITAS fits you, and who sponsors it?

Work, investor and family permits need a sponsor, and so does the one-year retirement permit; the remote worker, five-year retirement (E33E) and second home permits do not.[2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9]

Your sponsor files the application on their own account, and a change of job or sponsor must be reported to immigration. The table sets out the common permits, with their official fees in October 2026.[3, 14]

Common KITAS types in Bali: who they suit, the sponsor and the official fee, October 2026 (jt = million)

Investor (E28A)Shareholder of at least IDR 10 billion in an Indonesian companyThe companyIDR 7 jt (1 year) or 9.5 jt (2 years)
Spouse of an Indonesian (E31A)Married to an Indonesian citizenRequiredFrom IDR 6 jt (1 year) or 8.5 jt (2 years); confirm when you apply
Spouse of a KITAS or KITAP holder (E31B)Married to a foreign residentRequiredIDR 6 jt (1 year) or 8.5 jt (2 years)
Retirement, 5 years (E33E)Aged 55 or overNoneIDR 13 jt, up to 5 years
Second home (E33)USD 130,000 in a state bank or a USD 1 million apartment (second home visa)NoneIDR 13 jt, up to 5 years

A remote worker KITAS needs an employment contract with a company set up outside Indonesia; for an Indonesian employer, the work route (E23) applies. Pick the code first on the which visa page, then read its own page in the official visa list before you pay.[2, 3]

Our rule

Choose the KITAS by what you will do in Bali, not by the cheapest fee.

Each permit covers only its own purpose.

How much does a KITAS cost?

A one-year KITAS costs IDR 6 million to IDR 7 million in official fees, and a five-year one costs IDR 13 million (about USD 724). The total is four fees added together: the visa, a verification fee, the stay permit and a re-entry permit.[2, 5, 7]

The table shows each part. The stay permit and re-entry permit rise with the length; the visa fee stays the same. The verification fee depends on the category of visa, so a spouse pays less than a remote worker.[1, 2, 5]

Official fees for a KITAS, by part and length, October 2026 (jt = million)
Part1 year2 years5 years
Limited stay visaIDR 500,000IDR 500,000IDR 500,000
Verification fee1 jt or 2 jt, by visa category1 jt or 2 jt2 jt
Stay permit (KITAS)3 jt5 jt7 jt
Re-entry permit1.5 jt2 jt3.5 jt
Total6 jt or 7 jt8.5 jt or 9.5 jt13 jt

These are immigration's official fees only, paid direct; agents charge more, as the quotes below show. The spouse visa's own page lists IDR 6 million for a year, but its breakdown adds to IDR 8.5 million, so confirm when you apply. A work KITAS also lists a Ministry of Manpower work permit among its documents. The fees for every visa sit together in the fees and fines table.[3, 5]

On the second home visa, the fee is not refunded if the application is refused. Check the total on evisa.imigrasi.go.id on the day you pay.[7]

Can you get a KITAS while you are in Bali?

Sometimes. A C1 visit visa can be switched to a KITAS inside Indonesia for listed purposes, such as work, family or a second home. Apply in the last 30 days before it ends. A D1 multiple-entry visa cannot.[11, 19, 20]

Not directly from a visa on arrival: immigration's visa on arrival page names a bridging visa to move to another stay permit, so ask immigration while your stay is still valid. Visa-free entry cannot be switched.[11, 21]

What are the KITAS requirements, and how do you apply?

You need a sponsor for a work, investor or family KITAS, and the core papers in the checklist below: a passport, a photo, a CV and a bank statement. You apply online, pay a bank billing code, then enter Indonesia on the visa; the KITAS is issued as you are admitted.[2, 3, 4, 5, 7]

  1. Have your sponsor open an account, if you need one

For a work, investor or family KITAS, your sponsor first opens an account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id and applies for you. For a remote worker, five-year retirement or second home KITAS, you apply yourself.[2, 3, 5, 8]

  2. Upload the documents

The work, spouse and remote worker visas ask for the same core papers, and each adds its own, such as a marriage certificate or proof of income. The bank statement can be in your name or your sponsor's.[2, 3, 5]

    • Passport valid for at least six months.
    • A recent colour photo, taken in the last year.
    • A CV.
    • A bank statement showing USD 2,000 over the last three months.
    • The papers your visa adds, from its page in the official visa list.
  3. Pay the billing code

After the application is submitted, the site shows a billing code. Pay it at a designated bank; the amount is the official fee for your visa and length.[3]

Pay only against a code shown on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, an address you type in yourself. Fraudulent visa services exist.[17]

  4. Enter Indonesia within 90 days

The visa is valid for 90 days from issue. Use it before then, or it lapses.[2, 7]

  5. Collect the KITAS

The KITAS and its re-entry permit are issued when the immigration officer admits you. Keep both with your passport.[2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]

  6. Register where you live

Within 14 days of getting the KITAS, register at the regency or city civil registration office for an SKTT (residence certificate).[15]

Do you need an agent for a KITAS?

No. Where no sponsor is needed, you file the application yourself; otherwise your sponsor files it, all on the official site.[2, 3]

Agents charge for their service, and the price moves with how fast you want it and whether you apply from abroad. The table sets sellers' quotes beside the official fee.[23, 24]

Official fees and sellers' quotes, seen 18 and 21 October 2026 (jt = million)
KITASOfficial feeSellers' quotes
Remote worker (E33G), 1 yearIDR 7 jtIDR 12 jt (from abroad) to 15.3 jt (in Indonesia)
Second home (E33), 5 yearsIDR 13 jtAbout IDR 39 jt (a USD 2,175 sale price, our conversion)

Neither quote says whether the official fee is inside it, so you cannot tell the service charge from the fee.[23, 24]

Our rule

If you file yourself, pay the official fee only through the billing code the official site issues.

Fraudulent visa services exist, and a code from the site is one only immigration issues.[17]

How do you extend a KITAS, or switch to a KITAP?

You extend a KITAS online, before it ends. Remote worker, five-year retirement and second home permits extend on evisa.imigrasi.go.id; for a work KITAS, the sponsor does it.[2, 3, 7, 8]

A KITAP is the next step for some holders. The official list names clergy, workers, investors and "older foreign tourists", who can switch after at least three years in a row on a KITAS. The spouse of an Indonesian can switch once the marriage is two years old, and the spouse of a KITAP holder can switch too.[12]

The list names no visa code. Ask your immigration office whether your retirement KITAS counts as "older foreign tourist" before you plan on it.[12]

The switch needs your passport, your KITAS, a letter confirming where you live and a statement of integration, filed online or at an immigration office; the papers vary by purpose.[13]

KITAP official fees, October 2026 (jt = million)
KITAP lengthOfficial fee
5 yearsIDR 7 jt
10 yearsIDR 12 jt
No end dateIDR 15 jt

Second home holders are not named on the list. Their permit runs up to five years, extendable, ten in all, and can be switched to another permit.[7, 12]

Our rule

Start the extension well before the KITAS ends, not in its last week.

Every day past the end date is an overstay, fined IDR 1 million (about USD 56) a day.[18]

What must you report once you hold a KITAS?

You must tell your local immigration office about any change to your address, job, sponsor, nationality or civil status: a birth, marriage, divorce or death. If your sponsor has already reported it, you need not.[14]

Moving villa counts as a change of address. Not reporting can cost up to three months in detention or a fine of up to IDR 25 million (about USD 1,390).[1, 14]

Accommodation owners and managers also report their foreign guests to immigration, through its APOA app; more on long-term rentals. A KITAS also exempts you from the Bali tourist levy, whose page shows how to claim it.[16, 22]

Our rule

Report each change as it happens: a move, a new job or sponsor, a marriage or a birth.

If your sponsor reports it for you, keep proof that it did.[14]
