Short answer
One person in Bali spends about IDR 13 million (about USD 724) a month in a rented room, from IDR 26 million in a one-bedroom on a lean budget, and IDR 38 to 49 million as a remote worker. Settle the rent first: in a one-bedroom it is most of the month.[1]

In detail
How much does it cost to live in Bali per month?
Rent sets the month. In a kos, a rented room in a shared building, a month comes to about IDR 13 million (about USD 724); in a Canggu villa it is about IDR 29 million, with the same other costs under both. Across the five areas a lean one-bedroom month costs IDR 26 million (about USD 1,450) to IDR 34 million (about USD 1,890) and a remote worker's IDR 38 million (about USD 2,120) to IDR 49 million (about USD 2,730), and rent takes 58 to 74 percent of it.[1]
Converted at Indonesia's tax reference rate for the week of 21 October 2026.[4]Each budget states its rent. The room is a Canggu kos or guesthouse room at IDR 4.5 million, the middle of the IDR 4 to 5 million a foreigner pays from. The lean month takes the low end of a Canggu one-bedroom villa, IDR 20 million, and the remote month its middle, IDR 25 million, plus a desk. The area table below gives the rent in each area.[1]
| Budget | Rent basis | Rent | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rented room | Kos room, Canggu | 4.5 | 13.3 |
| One-bedroom, lean | Low end of the villa or listed rent, by area | 17.5–25.0 | 26.3–33.8 |
| Remote worker | Middle of the villa or listed rent, plus a desk, by area | 21.9–33.8 | 38.0–49.4 |
Here is how the lean Canggu month adds up. Start with the low end of a Canggu one-bedroom villa, IDR 20 million (about USD 1,110), then add the lines below; the room budget adds the same lines to a kos room. The remote worker eats out more, rides a bigger scooter, uses more power and pays for a desk and fuller cover. Swap any line for your own. The internet line is for places without it: wifi and cleaning are usually included in a monthly rent, electricity extra.[10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28]
| Line | Lean | Remote worker | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groceries | 4.5 | 4.5 | One person's shopping for a month |
| Eating out | 1.1 | 2.4 | Lean: 20 warung (small local eatery) meals and 10 flat whites. Remote: 30 meals, 30 coffees and 8 beers |
| Scooter rental | 1.0 | 2.0 | A Vario 150, or an NMax-class automatic |
| Fuel | 0.2 | 0.3 | 20 L or 30 L of Pertalite (regular subsidised petrol) |
| Electricity and drinking water | 0.5 | 0.8 | 300 kWh or 500 kWh, our assumption of AC at night only, and four 19 L galon (refillable water jug) refills |
| Phone and home internet | 0.3 | 0.5 | 10 GB or 15 GB of mobile data, and the cheapest or a 300 Mbps home plan |
| Health cover, per four weeks on lean | 1.1 | 3.2 | SafetyWing Essential (per four weeks) or Complete (a month) |
| Coworking | 0 | 1.5–2.5 | A monthly desk; the top of the range is Ubud and Uluwatu |
| Everything except rent and a desk | 8.8 | 13.7 |
Read the bottom row first. Everything except rent and a desk costs less than a one-bedroom's rent in any area, and groceries are the biggest of those lines.
Pick a budget and an area to see that month line by line, each line with its source.
| What you pay | IDR jt (jt = million) | About USD | Source, checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom villa, low end of the owner's range, a month, Canggu | 20.0 | 1,114 | [1] 21 October 2026 |
| Groceries | 4.5 | 253 | [28] 14 October 2026 |
| Eating out | 1.1 | 58.51 | [20, 21] 12 October 2026 |
| Scooter rental | 1.0 | 55.72 | [23] 21 October 2026 |
| Fuel | 0.2 | 11.14 | [10] 14 October 2026 |
| Electricity and drinking water | 0.5 | 28.39 | [11, 19] 14 October 2026 |

| Health cover, per four weeks on lean | 1.1 | 62.72 | [16] 14 October 2026 |
| Month | 28.8 | 1,602 |
Every line but rent and a desk is the same in every area. Swap any line for your own.
Food and fuel are cheap, and the rentals guide helps you settle the rent: the area and the lease.
Which area of Bali is cheapest to live in?
Ubud has the lowest month on both budgets, since its villa rent runs about 10 to 15 percent below Canggu's; Seminyak and Sanur rest on listed asking prices, so compare them with care. On a remote worker's month, Ubud, Canggu and Sanur sit within about IDR 3 million of each other. A rented room costs less than any one-bedroom: from IDR 4 to 5 million for a foreigner in Canggu, scaled for other areas (Ubud lower, Uluwatu higher, our estimate).[1]
| Area | Lean | Remote worker |
|---|---|---|
| Canggu | 28.8 | 40.2 |
| Ubud | 26.3 | 38.0 |
| Seminyak | 27.5 | 49.4 |
| Uluwatu | 31.3 | 44.3 |
| Sanur | 33.8 | 40.9 |
The lean month uses the low end of the villa rent in Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu, and the lowest listed asking rent in Seminyak and Sanur, while listed medians run above what renters pay. The remote month uses the middle of the villa rent, or the median listed asking rent, and adds a monthly desk: IDR 1.5 million in Canggu, 1.9 million in Seminyak, 2.25 million in Sanur and 2.5 million in Ubud and Uluwatu. Every other line is the same everywhere, so the gap between two areas is rent and the desk, nothing else.[26]
Seminyak and Sanur rest on a few listings, so treat a small gap between two areas as noise. Here are the listed asking prices, read on 18 October 2026.[2]
| Area | Lowest | Median | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canggu | 16.9 | 26.6 | 6 |
| Seminyak | 18.8 | 33.8 | 10 |
| Ubud | 18.8 | 24.4 | 4 |
| Uluwatu | 22.4 | 37.7 | 7 |
| Sanur | 25.0 | 25.0 | 3 |
Read each area like this:
- Canggu: the baseline, a one-bedroom villa at IDR 20 to 30 million a month and a loft at IDR 15 to 25 million; its listed apartments start at about IDR 17 million.[1, 2]
- Ubud: about IDR 17.5 to 26 million for a villa, our estimate, the lowest month on both budgets; its desk costs more, and its remote month comes to about IDR 38 million.
- Seminyak: listed asking prices only, from about IDR 19 million with a median near IDR 34 million, which puts its remote month highest of the five on those prices.
- Uluwatu: about IDR 22.5 to 34 million for a villa, our estimate, the dearest of the three villa areas. Choose it for the place, not the price.
- Sanur: listed asking prices on three listings, all from IDR 25 million, too few to rank. Its remote month sits near Canggu's.
The same five areas, with road distances to the airport and recent floods in four of them, sit side by side in where to live in Bali.
What do groceries and eating out cost?
Groceries for one person average about IDR 4.5 million (USD 253) a month, and for the same or less you can eat out for every meal. Gojek delivery from a local restaurant costs about IDR 10,000, and Gojek Plus makes it free.[28, 29]
| Item | IDR | Where |
|---|---|---|
| UHT full-cream milk, 1 L | 22,200 | Grand Lucky supermarket, Sanur |
| Eggs, 10 | 51,500 | Grand Lucky supermarket, Sanur |
| Premium rice, 1 kg | 16,056 | Bali average retail price |
| Flat white | 35,000 | Crate, Canggu |
| Inexpensive restaurant meal | 35,000 | Denpasar |
| Draught beer, 0.5 L | 35,000 | Restaurant, Denpasar |
The table mixes a supermarket shelf, the island's average retail price and cafés, so it shows what a week of shopping and eating out is made of.[17, 18, 20, 21]
Prices depend on the area. In Canggu a coffee is IDR 35,000 to 50,000 and a mid-range meal about IDR 150,000 to 200,000 a person. Upmarket Western restaurants climb fast: a Canggu steakhouse, Aged & Butchered, runs about IDR 2 million for two with two steaks and sides and no alcohol. Warungs and Indonesian restaurants cost much less, though some westernised warungs price up.[29]
The lean budget allows 20 meals and 10 coffees a month. The remote worker's 30 meals, 30 coffees and 8 beers more than double the line. The rest of daily life is in the living in Bali guide. If you eat plant-based or shop organic, our lists of vegan and vegetarian restaurants and health food stores sort them by area.
Treat brunch and a beach-club afternoon as a weekly outing, not a habit: coffees, smoothie bowls and beach-club afternoons can add up without you noticing.[37]
Refill a galon rather than buy bottled water. A 19 L refill costs about IDR 19,000, around IDR 1,000 a litre, though the price varies by shop.[19]
Our rule
Eat at warungs on most days and keep the Western restaurants for occasions.
Prices climb fastest there, and the monthly food bill follows.
What do transport and fuel cost?
A Vario 150 costs about IDR 1 million (about USD 56) a month, and it takes some looking for the best deal and provider. An NMax or a bulkier bike costs IDR 2 million (about USD 111) or more. A month in Canggu was quoted at IDR 800,000 to 1.5 million in February 2025, and about IDR 1.5 million for a 155 cc automatic in May 2026. The Vario's IDR 1 million sits inside those quotes; only the NMax's IDR 2 million sits above them.[22, 23, 25]
| Item | IDR | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Pertalite, 1 L | 10,000 | One price across Bali |
| Pertamax, 1 L | 15,950 | One price across Bali |
| Vario 150, one month | 1 million | Takes some looking for the best deal and provider |
| NMax or bulkier, one month | 2 million or more | The remote budget uses 2 million |
Fuel barely registers in the budget. Pertalite costs IDR 10,000 a litre at every Pertamina pump in Bali, and Pertamax (higher-octane unsubsidised petrol) IDR 15,950, so ask which grade your rental takes.[10] For shortages and any limits at the pump, see the fuel shortage page.
The lean budget's 20 L of Pertalite is one of the smallest lines on the page, and the scooter costs five times as much. Which licence you need to ride is on the moving to Bali guide.
Watch the meter show zero before the attendant starts filling, and report a short fill to Pertamina on 135: an attendant can "forget" to reset the meter, and a station has delivered less than was paid and called the gap an admin fee.[32, 38]
What do bills and health cover cost?
Phone and internet cost little, health cover costs more as the plan grows, and power is the one bill your habits move.
Staying connected costs little. A 30-day Telkomsel pack with 10 GB of data costs IDR 80,000, and home internet starts from IDR 250,000 a month. The published home internet prices name no region, so confirm yours for your address.[13, 14, 15]
| Plan | IDR | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Telkomsel data, 10 GB | 80,000 | 30 days, VAT included |
| Biznet home internet, from | 250,000 | A month; confirm for your address |
| Biznet home internet, 300 Mbps | 375,000 | A month, Jakarta price; Bali may differ |
Health cover is the bill that grows. For ages 18 to 39, SafetyWing's Essential plan runs to IDR 1.1 million (about USD 61) per four weeks. Complete is IDR 3.2 million (about USD 178) monthly, over two and a half times as much.[16] Essential bills every four weeks, so you pay 13 times a year, not 12. Read what each plan leaves out on health insurance in Bali before you count on it.
Know where you will go before you need it. Hospitals and emergency numbers are in the living in Bali guide.
Power is the bill you control, and the air conditioner decides it. A fan-cooled studio runs to about IDR 220,000 to 360,000 a month; a one-bedroom with the AC on most of the day, IDR 1 million (about USD 56) or more. Both are our estimates at the standard household rate.[11] The monthly budgets above assume AC at night only; with it on most of the day, power costs two to over three times the lean line.
A family villa with AC in several rooms and a pool pump sits on a bigger connection, at a higher rate per kWh. Here is what each kind of home uses and pays.[12]
| Home | Connection | Use a month | About a month (IDR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio with a fan | 1,300 VA | 150–250 kWh | 220,000–360,000 |
| One-bedroom, AC most of the day | 2,200 VA | 700–1,000 kWh | 1–1.4 million |
| Family villa, AC in several rooms and a pool pump | 3,500 VA or more | 1,200–2,000 kWh | 2–3.4 million |
Ask what the rent includes before you sign: rubbish collection and a contribution to the banjar, the village community association, can come on top of it, as the rentals guide shows line by line. A banjar contribution can run to about IDR 200,000 to 300,000 a month.[31, 37, 39]
Electricity is not included in the rent on Canggu listings, so it is your bill from the first day.[9] The rate follows the connection size, measured in VA (volt-amperes), not the size of the house.
Our rule
Ask the landlord for the connection size in VA, and a recent bill, before you sign.
A villa on 3,500 VA pays 18 percent more per kWh than one on 2,200 VA, every month you live there, and the bill shows how the last tenant used it.
What does coworking cost in Bali?
A monthly desk runs from IDR 1.5 million (about USD 84) at Tropical Nomad in Canggu to IDR 3.9 million (about USD 217) at BWork. Both are in Canggu; BWork's month is unlimited. Outpost in Ubud starts from IDR 2.5 million.[26, 27]
| Space | Day (IDR) | Month (IDR jt) | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tropical Nomad, Canggu | 260,000 | 1.5 | Starting prices |
| BWork, Canggu | 299,000 | 3.9 | Unlimited; focus room 2 hours a day, 30 printed pages, 2 yoga classes, 15 drink credits |
| Outpost, Ubud | 248,000 | 2.5 | Starting prices |
| Biliq, Seminyak | – | 1.9 | Monthly unlimited |
| Livit Hub, Sanur | – | 2.25 | Basic coworking |
| Uluwatu Hub, Uluwatu | – | 2.5 | Starting prices |
Inside Canggu the spread is two and a half times. The more expensive month buys more, from focus-room hours to yoga classes.
Day passes add up fast. At about IDR 260,000 a day, Tropical Nomad's month pays for itself on the sixth visit. The desk is also the one line besides rent that changes by area.
Cheaper deals sit away from the centres, and PUCO Coworking, just off Jalan Raya Canggu, is good value.[30]
What moves your number?
The lease moves your number more than any shop price. The norm for a year paid up front is about one to one and a half months off, so you pay 11 months for 12, fairly uniform across listings, and a larger discount is negotiable directly with the owner.[6]
On the 11-for-12 norm, a Canggu villa at IDR 20 million falls to about IDR 18.3 million (about USD 1,020) a month, and the lean Canggu month from about IDR 29 million to about IDR 27 million, our estimate. Some listings go further: one Berawa apartment asks IDR 16.9 million (about USD 942) monthly, or IDR 150 million for the year, which works out at IDR 12.5 million (about USD 697) a month, 26 percent less.[5] The whole year is paid before you move in, so the saving goes to whoever can lay out a year of rent on day one.
On that Berawa apartment's listed prices, a monthly let needs about IDR 35 million (about USD 1,950) on day one, by our estimate, and a yearly lease about IDR 164 million (about USD 9,140) to IDR 189 million (about USD 10,500). Deposits and booking fees run to one to three months' rent, and a monthly let typically takes one month.[2, 5, 7, 8]
| Paid on moving in | Monthly let | Yearly lease |
|---|---|---|
| Rent paid up front | 16.9 (first month) | 150 (the year) |
| Deposit | 16.9 (one month) | 12.5–37.5 (one to three months) |
| Setup: first scooter month, 10 GB data pack, first 300 kWh of electricity | 1.5 | 1.5 |
| Total | 35.3 | 164–189 |
Some costs sit outside the monthly budgets: a visa, the deposit and the flight in. The visa on arrival fee is in the ledger, and the longer visa routes are in the moving to Bali guide. None of the budgets has a gym line; the gym prices page lists day passes and memberships by area. Pricier gyms are generally worth it, and ClassPass suits people who train once or twice a week.[30]
Our rule
Ask for the yearly price on every listing you view, then decide whether you can lay out the year.
The norm is one to one and a half months off, and one Berawa apartment saves nearly as much a month as the whole grocery line.
Is Bali cheaper than Australia?
Yes. Every item on our list costs less in Bali than in Australia, from 26 percent less for milk to 84 percent less for a mobile plan. Rent, coffee, milk and the phone plan are compared with Sydney, and petrol with Perth.[1, 33, 36]
| Item | Bali, AUD | Australia, AUD | Bali is cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom rent, a month | 2,003 | 3,596 | 44% |
| Flat white or cappuccino | 2.80 | 5.66 | 50% |
| Milk, 1 L | 1.78 | 2.40 | 26% |
| Petrol, unleaded, 1 L | 0.80 | 2.45 | 67% |
| Mobile plan, a month | 6.41 | 39.39 | 84% |
A Canggu one-bedroom villa at the middle of its range costs about AUD 1,590 a month less than a Sydney city-centre one-bedroom, so almost all of the saving is in the rent. Packaged goods such as milk close the gap most, and the phone plan opens it widest. Planning the move from Australia? The moving to Bali guide sets out what to settle first, in order.
Is Bali cheaper than the US or the UK?
Against the US, yes on every item here but milk. Against the UK, on everything but rent: a Canggu one-bedroom villa at the middle of its range costs about 5 percent more than the UK's average city-centre one-bedroom.[1, 34, 35]
| Item | Bali, USD | United States, USD | Bali against the US |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom rent, a month | 1,393 | 1,647 | 15% cheaper |
| Flat white or cappuccino | 1.95 | 5.48 | 64% cheaper |
| Milk, 1 L | 1.24 | 1.06 | 17% more |
| Petrol, unleaded, 1 L | 0.56 | 1.05 | 47% cheaper |
| Mobile, 10 GB data, a month | 4.46 | 62.00 | 93% cheaper |
| Item | Bali, GBP | United Kingdom, GBP | Bali against the UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom rent, a month | 1,051 | 1,005 | 5% more |
| Flat white or cappuccino | 1.47 | 3.60 | 59% cheaper |
| Milk, 1 L | 0.93 | 1.25 | 25% cheaper |
| Petrol, unleaded, 1 L | 0.42 | 1.50 | 72% cheaper |
| Mobile, 10 GB data, a month | 3.36 | 13.66 | 75% cheaper |
From the US, rent runs about USD 250 a month lower, and the phone nearly USD 60 lower. From the UK, rent costs more, so the saving comes from everything else; a yearly lease brings the rent down too.
