Short answer

Bali airport is about 18 to 20 km from Canggu, a drive of 45 minutes to over 2 hours, and a booked car or Grab costs IDR 200,000 to 300,000 (about AUD 16). Book the car, or order Grab, before you leave arrivals.[5]

In detail

How far is Canggu from Bali airport, and how long does the drive take?

Canggu is about 18 to 20 km from Ngurah Rai airport (I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, code DPS). Canggu has no airport of its own.[1]

In practice the drive takes 45 minutes to over 2 hours. The worst window is 16:00 to 19:00 WITA, and the slowest roads are Sunset Road, Kerobokan and the roads into Berawa, Batu Bolong and Pererenan. The way back uses the same road and the same window.[2]

Our rule

Keep the 16:00 to 19:00 window clear for an airport run.

A flight home from Canggu is the trip where the jam costs most.

How much is a taxi from Bali airport to Canggu?

A pre-booked car or Grab to Canggu is about IDR 200,000 to 300,000 (about AUD 16) a car, slightly under the sellers' list fare of IDR 350,000.[5]

The list fare is IDR 350,000 for a 7-seat car with up to four passengers, airport parking included and tolls not.[3]

A higher list fare, from May 2026, is IDR 560,000 for a standard car with one to three passengers.[4]

A car carries up to four, so the fare splits. The table works it through for a group of four, our estimate from the two fares.

Booked car or Grab200,000 to 300,00050,000 to 75,000
Sellers' list, 7-seat car350,00087,500

The list fare is IDR 50,000 to 150,000 a car above the booked fare. Drivers at the arrivals hall sometimes approach you, and some claim to drive for an app. They quote no fixed fare, so overpaying is easy.[7, 23]

Our rule

Book a car before you fly, or order Grab outside the hall, and ignore the offers inside it.

The fare is fixed before you get in.

Can I use Grab or Gojek to leave the airport and be picked up in Canggu?

Yes for the ride itself: an app shows the fare before the trip starts, with no meter to argue over.[6]

The trouble is the pickup in Canggu. Local drivers sometimes refuse Grab and Gojek pickups at Echo Beach and Batu Bolong. Walk to the main road, or 100 to 200 metres inland, before you order.[9, 10, 24, 25]

Our rule

Walk to the main road before you order a ride from the beach.

A driver who cancels costs you more time than the walk does.

How do I get from Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu or Sanur to Canggu?

Seminyak is the short hop: 9 km, 45 minutes by car at midday and 1.5 hours at 17:00. A scooter takes 20 minutes at midday and 35 at 17:00.[10]

Ubud takes 75 to 95 minutes at midday, and 100 to 130 minutes in the sunset peak from 16:30 to 19:30.[11]

Uluwatu takes 1 hour 45 minutes at midday and 2.5 to 3 hours or more from 15:00 to 18:00. Avoid leaving Canggu after about 14:30.[12]

Sanur is 22 km and takes 1 to 1.5 hours.[2]

Sellers' fares for these runs, checked on 21 October 2026, are in the table. Plan on the drive times above.

On the way in, the Berawa main strip and the Canggu to Seminyak road are often jammed in the late afternoon, and the same trip takes far longer than at midday.[13]

Our rule

Leave Uluwatu and Ubud runs for the middle of the day.

Both runs are slowest in the afternoon peak.

For the other end of those runs, see Ubud and Uluwatu.

Is it safe to arrive in Canggu at night?

Settle the car before you fly. Pre-booked drivers are typically waiting in the arrivals area, however late the flight lands.[7]

After midnight there are often fewer drivers at the airport, and a very late arrival may find only small app cars that do not suit luggage.[8, 26]

Our rule

Book the car for a flight after midnight, and give the driver your flight number.

It is the one arrival where a walk-up ride may not turn up.

The Bali airport guide has the pickup point and the touts to ignore.

Can I do a Nusa Penida day trip from Canggu?

Yes, but no boat leaves from Canggu. The boats leave from Sanur harbour, 22 km and 1 to 1.5 hours from Canggu by car.[2]

The first boat leaves Sanur at 06:30 WITA and the last at 17:00 WITA. The last boats back to Sanur also leave around 17:00, so book the return with the outward boat; getting back from Nusa Penida has the details. Boats can fill up quickly, so reach the port early.[14]

The crossing takes about 45 minutes. A one-way ticket booked online is IDR 170,000 to 215,000 (about AUD 14), and some operators ask up to IDR 250,000 at the harbour booth.[14]

For the day, a return boat is IDR 340,000 to 430,000 a person booked online, and a car from Canggu to Sanur and back is IDR 550,000 to 850,000 a car, our estimate from two operators' one-way fares. Island fees are extra; the Nusa Penida fees page has them.[14]

Our rule

Book the boat ahead and leave Canggu in the dark.

The day is a long one, and a car to Sanur takes up to an hour and a half before the queue starts.

The fast boat guide covers the crossing, and Nusa Penida, Bali has the island.

How do I get around Canggu: scooter or taxi?

A scooter is IDR 60,000 to 100,000 a day plus IDR 10,000 to 15,000 of petrol, so IDR 70,000 to 115,000 (about AUD 5.6) a day all in. Weekly rentals usually take 30 to 40 percent off the daily rate.[17]

A Grab or Gojek ride in Canggu costs IDR 15,000 to 45,000, so a scooter day equals about three rides at the midpoint, our estimate. A week at the full day rate is IDR 490,000 to 805,000 before any discount.[18]

You need a motorcycle licence and a permit valid for your country; the scooter licence guide has the rule by country. Police run regular licence checks on tourists on scooters in Canggu.[21, 27]

Beach parking is for scooters only, about IDR 2,000 to 5,000, with no entry fee at Batu Bolong, Echo Beach or Pererenan.[15]

Parking around Batu Bolong, Berawa and the beach clubs is often limited, and it fills up quickly around sunset.[16, 28]

Pererenan to Echo Beach is around 10 minutes by car.[19]

Our rule

Rent the scooter if you hold the licence and ride most days, and use the apps if you do not.

Cars lose the time they save in the late-afternoon jams.
