Best area to stay in Canggu: which part suits you?

Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach are the busier, beach-facing parts. Pererenan, Umalas and Seseh are quieter. The Canggu guide covers whether the area suits you at all.[1]

UmalasResidential, leafyClosest beaches a ten-minute scooter rideStreets far less crowded
SesehA more authentic, tranquil side of the islandReef break, intermediateTranquil

Umalas has its closest beaches a ten-minute scooter ride away, and its streets are far less crowded than those in Seminyak and Canggu.[6]

Noise is rarely a problem unless you stay close to a beach club, bar or club. Building work and temple ceremonies are the commoner disturbances.[17]

Our rule

Pick the part by your evenings: on foot in Batu Bolong, beach clubs in Berawa, quiet in Pererenan, Umalas or Seseh.

Umalas trades a ten-minute scooter ride to the beach for quieter streets.

Which part of Canggu is best for couples, families, first-timers or surfers?

  • Couples: Pererenan, for quiet, rice fields and boutique stays, at the highest nightly price.[1, 7]

  • Families: Umalas, for leafy residential streets, with the closest beaches a ten-minute scooter ride away.[6]

  • First-timers: Batu Bolong, the walkable cafe hub, or Berawa for beach clubs and nightlife.[2]

  • Surfers: Batu Bolong for beginners, Berawa for intermediates, Echo Beach for experienced surfers.[2]

With children, or on a wet day, cafes, spas and indoor options fill the time; things to do in Canggu has the spa, cafe and yoga prices.[26]

Our rule

Choose by your surf level first, then by how quiet you want the evenings.

The surf level fixes the beach; the evenings fix the street.

Pererenan or Berawa: which should you stay in?

Berawa is polished and beach-club heavy, while Pererenan is quieter, with rice fields and boutique stays.[1]

Berawa is very busy with lots of traffic, and Pererenan is the more serene and secluded stay.[4]

The price runs the other way: Pererenan is the priciest part per night for visitors.[7]

Echo Beach, for surf or a bar, is about 10 minutes by car from Pererenan.[23]

Our rule

Take Berawa for nightlife and the beach clubs, Pererenan for quiet if you can pay more.

Berawa is the busier of the two.

Pererenan or Seseh: which should you stay in?

Both are quiet. Pererenan is serene and secluded, and Seseh is a more authentic, tranquil side of the island.[4]

The waves differ. Pererenan's river mouth suits intermediate to advanced surfers and Pantai Lima beginners to intermediates. Seseh is a reef break for intermediates.[5]

Our rule

Choose by the wave: Pantai Lima for a beginner, Pererenan's river mouth for stronger surf, Seseh's reef for an intermediate.

How much does a night in Canggu cost?

A simple guesthouse or homestay room with its own bathroom is about IDR 250,000 to 400,000 (about AUD 20) a night.[8]

A hostel dorm bed is IDR 121,000 to 462,000 a night (EUR 6 to 23), and rises in high season and on holidays.[9]

Above that, a mid-range room in a boutique hotel or small villa is around IDR 1.2 million (about AUD 96). A private pool villa is IDR 2.87 million to 5.02 million (about AUD 230) a night (USD 160 to 280).[12]

Published villa rates in Pererenan run higher. A private-pool villa lists at IDR 6.7 million a night in low season and IDR 10.7 million at peak (USD 375 and USD 595). The minimum stay is 2 nights in low season and 7 at peak, and 15.5 percent tax is added.[10]

Near Berawa Beach, a villa's 2-bedroom rate runs IDR 3.9 million to 7.3 million a night (USD 215 to 405).[11]

Our rule

Ask for the price with tax and the minimum stay for your dates.

A listed nightly rate leaves out the 15.5 percent tax on these villas.

How long should you stay in Canggu?

Two to three nights is enough for a first visit.[13]

At the simple-room band that is IDR 500,000 to 800,000 for two nights and IDR 750,000 to 1.2 million for three, our estimate.[8]

A pool villa with a 2-night minimum in low season, rising to 7 at peak, fits a 3-night stay only in low season.[10]

Our rule

Book two nights in the part you like, then extend on the ground.

A first visit is two to three nights.

Where to stay in Canggu for a month or more?

Thirty nights at the simple-room band cost IDR 7.5 million to 12 million, our estimate. A Canggu room is typically from IDR 4 million to 5 million a month, so nightly booking costs up to 1.5 to 3 times as much. A one-bedroom villa is IDR 20 million to 30 million a month.[14]

Wifi and cleaning are usually included in a monthly rent; electricity is extra.[15]

Where to live in Bali prices Canggu by the month against the other areas.

Our rule

Price a monthly rental instead of multiplying a nightly rate.

Ask what the rent leaves out, as electricity is extra.

Is Canggu a good place to stay? What to check before you book

Yes, for beaches, surf and eating out; the Canggu guide covers who it suits. Before you book, check the pickups, the lane and the drive.

Grab and Gojek pickups at Echo Beach and Batu Bolong are sometimes refused by local drivers. Walk 100 to 200 metres inland, to the main road, before you order.[20, 21]

The beaches at Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenan have no entry fee; scooter parking is about IDR 2,000 to 5,000.[22]

The airport is about 18 to 20 km away.[18]

The drive takes 45 minutes to over 2 hours. The worst time is usually 16:00 to 19:00 WITA, on the roads into Berawa, Batu Bolong and Pererenan. How to get to Canggu covers the fares and the apps.[19]

Floodwater in a Berawa lane reached about 1 metre in September 2025, so ask a host whether the lane drains.[16]

To ride a scooter you need a motorcycle licence and a permit valid for your country; see the scooter licence rules.[24]

  • What is next door: a beach club, a bar or building work.
  • Whether the lane floods in heavy rain.
  • How you will get home at night from the beach strip.
  • The tax and the minimum stay on a villa, for your dates.

Our rule

Check what is next door and how the lane drains before you pay.

A listing photo shows neither the noise nor the water.
