In detail

What are the things to do in Nusa Penida, and what do they cost?

Pick one coast: the west has the Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong viewpoints and Crystal Bay's snorkelling, the east Diamond Beach and Atuh. A day tour costs from about IDR 858,000 (about AUD 69) a person in a group of six, plus the site fees.[3, 5]

Sights in the site-fee scheme, such as Crystal Bay, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong, want tickets bought ahead through your driver or tour. The Nusa Penida fees page has the amounts.[11]

Diamond Beach's landowner charges a small cash entrance fee, so carry small notes.[1]

The sections below give times, swimming rules and prices. Where you sleep decides how far you drive to these: see where to stay in Nusa Penida, and how to get to Nusa Penida for boats and island transport.

Is Kelingking Beach worth the walk down, and is there a lift?

The viewpoint is the reason to come, and the walk to the beach is optional. The viewpoint is about a five-minute walk from the car park. The path down is 156 built steps and then unbuilt rock trail with a low bamboo handrail, about 20 to 40 minutes each way. The glass lift is not operating.[2, 5]

Allow 1 to 2 hours for the viewpoint alone and 2 to 3 hours with the hike. The beach sits in the cliff's shadow in the morning, so the beach is best from about 15:00 and the view from the top at 16:00 to 17:00. Crowds build from about 11:00. Swimming at the beach has been banned since February 2023.[2, 5]

Stay on the marked path and behind the railings: visitors who leave it can fall, and rescue is slow.[2, 6]

Our rule

On a day trip, see Kelingking from the top before 10:00, and go down only if you have two spare hours.

After 16:00 suits only those sleeping on the island, since the last boats to Sanur leave around 17:00.

Can you swim at Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach?

No. Swimming at Angel's Billabong has been officially prohibited since a fatal accident in February 2023, and the pool is dangerous at high tide. Broken Beach, the rock arch, is a viewpoint only.[4]

The two share a car park and are a few minutes apart. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for Broken Beach and 1 to 2 hours for both, and go early or late: midday is the busiest. Broken Beach is about 40 minutes from Toyapakeh and 20 to 30 minutes from Kelingking.[4]

Our rule

Look at the pool from the viewpoint and keep out of the water.

The sea does not care how calm it looks.

What is there to see on the east coast: Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach?

Diamond Beach is a clifftop view with a carved stairway down to the sand, and swimming is forbidden because of rip currents and drownings. The descent takes 15 to 25 minutes. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the viewpoint and 2 to 3 with the descent.[1]

The beach faces east, so go in the morning; the cliff shades it in the afternoon, and sunrise means arriving before 06:00. Atuh Beach, next door, is calmer than Diamond but still has strong waves and currents, so paddle rather than swim. The staircase down is well over a hundred steps, and at low tide the shore is rocky rather than sandy. Atuh is best in the afternoon, when it has sun.[1, 3]

One east-coast tour also stops at Goa Giri Putri, a cave temple about 30 minutes from Toyapakeh, where you pay a donation and wear a sarong, which you can rent at the entrance. The east-coast road is very good along almost its whole length.[3, 8]

Where is the best snorkeling on Nusa Penida?

Crystal Bay, on the west coast, is one of the easiest beaches on the island for snorkelling. Hire a mask and fins on site for about IDR 50,000, a seller's quote, updated July 2026, and expect a tour to give you 45 to 60 minutes there.[5, 9]

Penida has some currents, and the sea is about 26 degrees all year, with July to September the calmest. Crystal Bay is also a sunset spot, and it charges a site fee, listed on the fees page.[9, 10, 11]

Our rule

Ask your boat or hire stall about the day's current before you swim out.

Snorkel in the dry season if you can choose.

Can you snorkel with manta rays at Manta Point?

Yes, from a boat, not a beach. Boats leave from near Toyapakeh harbour or Crystal Bay in the morning and take 30 to 40 minutes to reach Manta Point. Mantas can be seen all year, and May to October is warmer and clearer.[12]

Manta Bay is a different, crowded site with a much smaller chance of seeing mantas. Manta Point tours cost about twice as much, so ask the price and the start time when you book. You need to be comfortable swimming in strong currents for a long time, and the sea can be choppy.[12]

Our rule

Ask the seller whether the boat goes to Manta Point or Manta Bay before you pay.

The names sound alike and the trips are not.

How much is a Nusa Penida tour from Bali?

A day tour from Sanur with boat, car and lunch costs IDR 858,000 (about AUD 69) to 1.5 million a person for the west coast and IDR 875,000 to 1.6 million for the east, depending on group size. Hotel pickup is extra, and children under 4 go free on both.[5, 8]

Day tour from Sanur, per person, sellers' quotes, updated July 2026 for the west and September 2026 for the east (jt = million)
Group sizeWest coastEast coast
5 to 6IDR 858,000IDR 875,000
3 to 4IDR 925,000IDR 950,000
2IDR 1.1 jtIDR 1.2 jt
SoloIDR 1.5 jtIDR 1.6 jt

The west-coast tour includes the island fee; ask the east-coast seller. The east-coast tour runs 10 to 12 hours door to door. The boat fares are on the fast boats guide, and a driver for the day is the other way to do it: see getting around on the island.[5, 8]

Our rule

Ask what a tour includes before you compare prices: the boat, lunch, the fees and pickup.

Pickup is extra on the quotes above.

How long does it take to drive between the west and east coasts?

Between 1 and 1.5 hours each way from Kelingking to Diamond Beach, which is why a day trip from Sanur covers one coast and two coasts take a night.[1, 3]

Drive times between the main sights, from Toyapakeh harbour unless stated
FromToDrive

ToyapakehBroken BeachAbout 40 minutes
KelingkingBroken Beach20 to 30 minutes
ToyapakehGoa Giri PutriAbout 30 minutes
ToyapakehDiamond BeachAbout 1 hour
KelingkingDiamond Beach1 to 1.5 hours

Road works are still going on in the south-west, near Kelingking, and a new stretch of road can end abruptly in an old one, so allow extra time there.[2, 3, 7]

A seller's east-coast day shows how full the clock gets: a boat from Sanur at 07:30, Toyapakeh at 09:00, the cave temple from 09:45, Diamond Beach at 11:30, lunch at Atuh, and the return to Toyapakeh at 16:00. Plan the final sight around the last boats to Sanur, which leave around 17:00.[8, 13]

Our rule

Stay a night and do the west coast one day and the east the next.

Both in a day means hours in the car.

What is there to do in Nusa Penida with kids?

Crystal Bay and Atuh Beach are the easier sights with children. The walk down at Kelingking is 156 steps and then unbuilt rock trail, and the stairways at Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach are long, so Atuh still means a climb back up.[1, 2]

Children under 4 go free on day tours, and the child rate for site fees is on the fees page. Nusa Lembongan, a short boat away, has the shorter distances and easier snorkelling that suit young children better.[5, 8, 10]

Our rule

With young children, stay at the viewpoints and skip the Kelingking walk.

The path ends in unbuilt trail.

What is there to do in Nusa Penida at night?

Day-trippers see none of it: the last boats to Sanur leave around 17:00. If you sleep on the island, nightlife is growing fast, with a growing number of bars on the north coast, and Lembongan is livelier.[10, 13]

The other evening plan is sunset at Crystal Bay, then dinner near your hotel. Darkness comes about 45 minutes after sunset, around 19:00, traffic is light and some roads are poorly kept, so drive slowly. Don't ride a scooter back from Kelingking after dark.[2, 7, 9]

Our rule

Finish the west coast by sunset, and book a driver for any evening out.

There is no Grab or Gojek on the island.
