Short answer

Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls on Monday 8 March 2027. In 2026 the airport closed for 24 hours from 06:00 WITA and the ferries shut earlier, so do not book a flight in or out that day.[2]

In detail

When is Nyepi in 2027?

Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence and New Year, is Monday 8 March 2027. It is a national public holiday, listed in the government's 2027 holiday list. Sources differ by a day; see Conflicts below.[2]

What shuts down on Nyepi?

If 2027 follows 2026, all transport stops from the morning of 8 March 2027: the airport, the ferries, the fast boats and the intercity buses. Mobile data may be off too. In 2026 no land, sea or air transport could run from 06:00 WITA on Nyepi to 06:00 WITA the next day. The table shows what shut.[3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11]

The data switch-off was a request to operators, not an order, and hospitals, police, government offices, the airport and the ports were excepted. Fibre WiFi was to stay on, and airport staff were set to stand by for urgent flights such as medical ones, if the authorities approve. If you rely on your phone, plan for no mobile data from the morning of Nyepi and download your maps, tickets and bookings the day before.[3, 9, 10]

Boats to the Nusa islands also stop on a second day, Nyepi Segara, the silence of the sea. In 2026 it fell on 27 September, when every crossing to and from Nusa Penida, from Sanur, Kusamba and Padang Bai, stopped for 24 hours.[8]

Our rule

Buy food, water, cash and any medicine on 6 or 7 March 2027.

Mobile data may be off as well.

What are the Nyepi rules for visitors?

Four rules apply for the whole day, to visitors as well as residents, and pecalang (village guards) walk the streets to enforce them.[11]

  • No fire or light, electric light and devices included.
  • No going out.
  • No work, physical or mental.
  • No entertainment; malls, entertainment venues and tourist sites close.

Keep curtains drawn at night, leave the music off, and do not step out for a walk or a swim at the beach. Breaking the rules brings a local penalty: a guard can hold a violator until the next day, set a clean-up around the village temple, or fine them IDR 100,000 (about AUD 8). Other villages set their own penalties, one village fines IDR 1 million (about AUD 80), and a violation that disrupts public order can be handed to the authorities.[11]

Our rule

Be in your hotel or villa before the closures start on the morning of 8 March 2027 (06:00 WITA at the airport in 2026).

Penalties differ by village, so do not test them.

Do hotels stay open on Nyepi?

Yes. Hotels stay open and keep their guests through Nyepi, but guests may not leave the property for the 24 hours. A hotel may serve meals to its guests in-house, while a private villa may require you to stock up on food in advance.[1]

Ask your hotel or villa host which meals it serves that day before you book.

What happens the night before and the day after Nyepi?

The night before Nyepi, Sunday 7 March 2027 by our reading, is the ogoh-ogoh (giant demon figure) parade, the main event of the day before Nyepi, with ceremonies at homes and villages.[12, 13]

In 2026 the parades were set for the evening of 18 March, the day before Nyepi on 19 March, and other ogoh-ogoh events were set for other dates that month. The 2027 schedule is not out, so check the village or venue you plan to visit.[12]

The day after Nyepi is Ngembak Geni, when people in Bali forgive each other and see family and friends. In 2026 it fell on the day after Nyepi, so in 2027 it is Tuesday 9 March by our reading, which is also a collective leave day. The airport reopens at 06:00 WITA that day if 2027 follows 2026, with first flights from about 07:00 WITA.[2, 3, 14]

Does Nyepi 2027 overlap Eid al-Fitr?

Nearly, and almost the whole week is off. Nyepi is Monday 8 March, 9 March is a collective leave day, the Idulfitri (Eid al-Fitr) holidays are listed for 10 and 11 March, and 12 and 15 March are collective leave days. Every weekday from 8 to 15 March is a day off for many Indonesians, though private employers set their own collective leave, so businesses may reopen at different times. Treat the Idulfitri dates as provisional, and see our Bali public holidays 2027 guide for the full calendar.[2]

That puts Nyepi two days before Idulfitri, the end-of-Ramadan holiday. In 2025 the same gap meant the airport closure coincided with the expected peak homecoming period, and travellers might need to arrive before or after the holiday. By our estimate, expect full flights on 6 and 7 March and again from 9 March.[15]

How do you plan flights and arrivals around Nyepi?

Land by 6 March 2027 or from 9 March, which keeps a night's slack before the closure. The last flights in and out in 2026 were around midnight on the eve, and the first ones came at about 07:00 WITA the day after.[3] Our airport arrival guide covers what happens once you land, and our getting around guide the rides and boats afterwards.

  1. Decide your dates now

Book flights to land by 6 March 2027, or on or after 9 March 2027. A 7 March landing leaves no slack: in 2026 the last arrivals were at 23:05 (domestic) and 00:30 (international), and nothing landed again until about 07:00 WITA the day after Nyepi.[3]

  2. Leave a day of slack on a connection

Do not cut a flight close to the closure. In 2026 the last international departure left at 01:30 WITA on Nyepi morning, and the airport stayed shut until 06:00 WITA the next day, so a missed connection leaves you waiting for the reopening. By ferry, cross a day early: the Ketapang side closed the evening before Nyepi in 2026.[3, 5]

  3. Book your hotel for the full 24 hours

If you are in Bali on 8 March 2027, book a hotel or villa you are happy to stay inside, and ask what meals it serves that day. A private villa may expect you to bring your own food.[1]

  4. Check the notices in the last days

Check the airline and the airport again in the days before 8 March 2027, from 1 March. A booking made months ahead can still be cancelled: in 2026 the flights scheduled for the closure were cancelled.[3]

When will the Nyepi 2027 airport closure be announced?

Not yet. As of 21 October 2026 there is no 2027 notice for the airport closure, the ports, the buses or the mobile data request. In 2026 the ferry schedule came out 17 days ahead, on 2 March, and the airport closure a week ahead, on 12 March.[4, 7, 9]
