How much money do you need for Bali per day?

One person needs about IDR 560,000 a day on a budget, IDR 2.05 million mid-range or IDR 4.86 million in comfort, our estimate. The room is the biggest line in every style, and in comfort it is more than half the day. The rest is food, getting around, mobile data and activities, and the second table shows what each style buys.[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14]

Mobile data is one 10 GB pack a week in every style. Room rates are guide prices, not operators' own rate cards. The totals leave out flights, the visa and the tourist levy, which are in the arrival cost guide, health cover, which is in the health insurance guide, and rent beyond a short stay, which is in the cost of living guide. They also leave out the service charge and tax some restaurants add, covered below.

How much money do you need for a week in Bali?

A week costs one person about IDR 3.9 million on a budget, IDR 14.3 million mid-range or IDR 34 million in comfort, our estimate. Two people sharing a room and a vehicle pay a fifth to two-fifths more than one person, not double, because each still pays for their own food, rides, data and activities.[1, 7, 9, 11]

The week for one is seven days of the day total, with one 10 GB data pack for the week. The two-person weeks assume one room, one scooter or driver, and a data pack, food, rides and activities each. A scooter costs 30 to 40 percent less a day by the week, and the cost of living guide prices a stay of a month or more.[7]

Our rule

Set the week total for your style, then add flights and arrival fees on top.

The totals leave out both.

What does each line of a Bali budget cost?

An inexpensive restaurant meal costs IDR 35,000 (Denpasar), a scooter IDR 60,000 to 100,000 a day and a driver with a car IDR 540,000 to 850,000 a day; the table has the rest.[1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12]

In Canggu a mid-range meal often runs IDR 150,000-200,000 a person.[6]

The car price includes the driver, fuel and water but not parking. A full day with a driver usually runs IDR 550,000 to 950,000, so the Avanza price is just under that range and the Innova near its top. The price you get depends on a good contact or on negotiating.[5, 8, 9, 10, 18]

The Seminyak cover is redeemable for drinks, so the mid-range day costs up to IDR 100,000 less if you spend it there. The Ungasan pass includes IDR 500,000 of food and drink credit, so the comfort day costs up to IDR 250,000 less if you use it.[13, 14]

Should you carry cash or pay by card or QRIS?

Carry a small amount of cash even if you pay most things by QRIS (the national QR payment code). QRIS works at shops, markets and cafés that show its logo, and cash covers the places that do not, plus tips. To pay this way from abroad, you first set up a payment account and transfer funds into it.[19]

You can also link an international Visa card to the DANA e-wallet and pay at QRIS merchants across Indonesia.[20]

Amex is accepted almost nowhere. Visa and Mastercard generally work, but acceptance varies from restaurant to restaurant and payment problems sometimes arise, so carry some cash.[17]

A scooter is the one cost that asks for cash up front: most reputable shops take a cash deposit in place of your passport.[7]

Petrol10,000–15,000
A day's budget food140,000
Total510,000–755,000

Our rule

Land with at least IDR 755,000 (about AUD 61) in cash if you will rent a scooter, or IDR 140,000 if you will not, then pay by QRIS where you see the logo.

The deposit is cash, and so are places without the logo and tips.

What is the service charge and tax on a Bali restaurant bill?

Many mid-range and upscale restaurants add a service charge and a tax to the menu price, written "++" beside it. Add about a fifth: at one Seminyak beach club both are 10 percent, so a dish listed at IDR 200,000 comes to about IDR 240,000 at the till. Smaller warungs (small local eateries), food stalls and markets usually add nothing.[1, 13]

The service charge is 5 to 10 percent, and each restaurant sets its own. The tax on food and drink is 10 percent at the Seminyak venue above.[13, 15, 16]

The day totals leave this out, because a menu price and a bill differ by venue. If you eat the mid-range dinner every night, add about IDR 40,000 a day, our estimate.

Our rule

Read the foot of the menu before you order.

If it says "++" or "plus 10% service and tax", add a fifth to the price you compare.

What pushes a Bali budget up?

Four things push a day up most: a room that moves up a tier, a driver in place of a scooter, a beach club in place of a warung afternoon and paid sights.[1, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14]

  • A room tier. A night costs about IDR 250,000 in a guesthouse, IDR 1.2 million in a boutique hotel or small villa and IDR 2.87 million in a private pool villa.
  • A driver. A day with a driver costs IDR 540,000 to 850,000 on one company's list, against IDR 70,000 to 115,000 for a scooter and petrol. Parking is extra. A scooter needs the right licence; see scooter licence rules before you budget one.
  • A beach club. Cover runs from IDR 200,000 for a late-afternoon slot to IDR 800,000 for an all-day pass with food and drink credit, and a reserved daybed asks a minimum spend of IDR 2 million to 15 million in October 2026.
  • A paid sight. A big sight such as the Sacred Monkey Forest costs IDR 130,000 an adult, so one a day adds up quickly over a week.

Our rule

Choose where to spend before you land.

A driver day costs as much as two to three and a half nights in a guesthouse.
