How much does a Mount Batur sunrise trek cost?

A sunrise trek on Mount Batur costs IDR 450,000 to 475,000 a person shared from Ubud, IDR 600,000 to 750,000 private, and about IDR 1.2 million (about AUD 96) a person at a hotel-run trek with tax and service, our estimate. The prices below are sellers' quotes, with what each covers.[1, 2, 3]

The jeep tour is a 4x4 drive to a viewpoint with a short walk, not the summit climb, so its rows are there for comparison.[4]

Two adults sharing from Ubud pay IDR 900,000 (about AUD 72) to IDR 950,000 between them, our estimate from two sellers' prices. Two adults going private pay IDR 1.2 million to IDR 1.5 million. At the hotel-run trek, a couple pays about IDR 2.4 million with tax and service.[1, 2, 3]

What does a Mount Batur trek price include?

Every price above includes the entry or area fee and a guide. Most also include breakfast and a hotel transfer from a named zone. Tips are not included, and the Ubud Center combos leave out the entry fees at their extra stops.[1, 2, 4]

What moves your number:[1, 2, 3, 4, 6]

  • Where you sleep. Mount Batur Bali's transfer price covers only Ubud, Tegallalang and Kintamani, and it quotes IDR 50,000 to 300,000 extra for other areas, depending on the hotel; Ubud Center names no amount. It is unclear whether that is per person or per booking.
  • Shared or private. A private trek costs IDR 125,000 to 300,000 more a person than a shared one at the same seller, our estimate.
  • Add-ons. A coffee plantation stop costs nothing extra; a swing or a hot spring adds IDR 100,000 a person, our estimate, and the fees at the stop are paid on top.
  • Tax and service. The hotel-run price rises by 21 per cent at the till.
  • Tips. Tips are not in the price; IDR 50,000 to 100,000 for the guide is customary, not required.
  • Deposits. One jeep tour takes an EUR 8 deposit online, non-refundable, and the rest in rupiah on the day.

Our rule

Ask each seller for the pickup surcharge from your hotel in writing before you pay, and whether it is per person or per booking.

Ubud Center names no amount.

Bought on its own, the entry fee is about IDR 100,000 to 150,000. The guide's share of a shared trek costs about IDR 300,000 to 600,000 a group.[5, 6]

Do you need a guide to climb Mount Batur?

Treat a guide as required: sources differ on whether a written rule says so, and every price above already includes one; see Conflicts.[5, 6, 7]

Our rule

Book a trek that names the guide in the price rather than turning up alone.

A tour price settles the cost before you arrive.

What time does the Mount Batur trek start and how hard is it?

The climb starts around 03:30 WITA (Bali time), takes 1.5 to 2 hours up, and reaches the summit before sunrise at about 06:00 to 06:30. Door to door a tour takes 5 to 8 hours, and a longer schedule runs from a 02:00 pickup to 11:30 back at the hotel; the jeep tour with a hot spring takes about 10 hours.[1, 2, 4, 6, 7]

SanurAbout 01:45 WITA
UbudAbout 01:55 to 02:15 WITA

The descent takes 1 to 1.5 hours.[7]

The climb gains about 500 m to the 1,717 m summit on a relatively straightforward path. The way down is loose, slippery gravel, hard on the ankles. Sellers give the round trip as 4 to 5 km or 7 to 11 km.[1, 7, 10, 11]

Our rule

Wear shoes with grip and use the pole the tour lends you on the way down.

The gravel slips more going down than coming up.

Is Mount Batur safe to climb right now?

On 24 October 2026 Batur stood at level I (Normal), the lowest, on the geological agency's MAGMA list. The list gives no date for the level, so check it again before you climb.[9]

Level I means observations fluctuate without a significant rise in activity. Level II (Waspada) means activity is starting to rise and some volcanoes may erupt. In July 2026 the trail was open with no closure in effect, and the last eruption was in 2000.[6, 7, 9]

Our rule

Check Batur's level on MAGMA the evening before you climb.

A rise to level II is your sign to ask your seller what happens to your booking.

How do you get to Mount Batur from Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak?

You get there on the seller's transfer. From Ubud the drive is about 38 km and 1 hour, with pickup around 02:00 WITA. From Canggu or Seminyak it is about 2 to 2.5 hours, with pickup around 01:45.[1, 11, 13]

From Ubud, transfer is in the price at both walking-tour sellers. From Canggu or Seminyak, Mount Batur Bali quotes a surcharge of IDR 50,000 to 300,000 on its walking tour; Ubud Center names no amount. The jeep tour alone picks up there at 03:00 WITA, and the pickup is the gap between IDR 750,000 and the IDR 450,000 meet-at-start price: IDR 300,000 a person, our estimate.[2, 4]

Meeting at the start saves that gap, but you need your own way to Kintamani in the dark. A guide-only trek meets at about 03:00 and start climbing at 04:00; the jeep tour meets at 04:30. If you ride a scooter, read the scooter licence rules first.[4, 12]

When is the best season, and what should you bring?

The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest skies. The rainy season, November to March, brings more cloud and rain and fewer crowds, and the weather agency expects rain to begin in parts of Bali in November 2026.[6, 7, 14]

The summit is about 10 to 15 °C before sunrise, so wear layers.[7] Bring:

  • A jacket, long trousers and closed shoes with grip, never sandals.
  • At least 1 litre of water, a small backpack and snacks.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a power bank.
  • Cash for tips and anything the price leaves out.

Several sellers include a torch, flashlight or headlamp, and a headlamp keeps your hands free.[1, 2]

FAQ

Is the jeep tour a trek?

Our reading

Treat a guide as required: two operators and a 2013 news account describe unguided hikers being turned away, though no source cites a written rule.

One operator says a certified guide is required without describing checkpoints; another says a guide is technically optional but not recommended. Going alone risks being turned back after a 02:00 start.
