Short answer

Padang Padang suits first-time Uluwatu visitors who want to walk to cafes and a beach, on guide ranges from IDR 0.9 million (about AUD 72) to 2.7 million a night; Balangan and the Ungasan clifftop resorts suit quiet. Ask your host how many steps lead to the beach.[1]

Start where your plans sit:

Where should you stay in Uluwatu?

Stay in Padang Padang and Labuan Sait to walk to cafes and a beach, in Suluban for bars at night and surf by day, and in Balangan, Melasti or an Ungasan clifftop resort for quiet with a scooter or driver. The parts are not walkable to each other, so the part you pick is most of your trip. The Uluwatu guide covers whether the area suits you at all.[1, 2, 4, 5, 6]

Our rule

Book the part first and the hotel second.

A cheap room in the wrong part costs you a scooter ride at every meal.

How much does a night in Uluwatu cost?

A hotel night in Uluwatu spans about IDR 0.3 million (about AUD 24) to 14 million, and prices spread widely inside one part: Pecatu alone runs IDR 0.3 to 3.2 million, Padang Padang 0.9 to 2.7 million and Bingin 2.3 to 3.4 million, while one cliff-edge resort in Labuan Sait asks 4.8 to 9.5 million.[1]

These are guide ranges, not hotels' own rates. A range of one or two hotels shows where prices sit, not your rate, and tax and service may come on top.

PartGuide range a night
Pecatu0.3 to 3.2
Suluban0.4 to 2.0
Padang Padang0.9 to 2.7
Bingin2.3 to 3.4
Labuan Sait, one cliff-edge resort4.8 to 9.5
South coast, one resort6.5 to 14

For Balangan, Melasti and Ungasan, ask two or three hotels for a quote for your own dates.

Our rule

Price your dates on two booking sites with tax and service switched on, and use the range only as a starting point.

A range from August is not a rate.

Can you stay on the beach in Uluwatu?

Often not directly: many hotels require a walk down steep stairs to reach the sand.[1]

Padang Padang beach is about 120 steps down through a narrow gap in the rock. At Bingin the clifftop steps take 5 to 10 minutes and the beach shrinks at high tide. The beachfront warungs (small local eateries) there were lost in the 2025 demolition, so ask your host what the beach looks like now.[2, 3, 7, 8]

Balangan is a short ride from its beach, with one resort a couple of minutes' walk away, and Melasti and Ungasan are a short drive, so there the sand is a trip, not a stroll.[1, 4]

Our rule

Get the step count in writing from the host, before the deposit.

Steep steps are a small thing to a surfer and a large thing to a pram.

Which part of Uluwatu is best for surf villas?

Suluban, Padang Padang and Bingin all sit within walking distance of the beach, so they are the parts to search for a surf villa. Suluban's waves suit intermediate to expert surfers. The dry season, April to October, brings the most reliable sun and surf.[1, 8, 9]

One two-bedroom villa on a hill is a ride away, not a walk: it lists 1.8 km to Impossibles, 2.1 km to Padang Padang beach and 2.4 km to Bingin beach, with no walking route given.[11]

A villa agent's quoted rates for one two-bedroom villa, before 15.5% tax, seen 21 October 2026; rupiah figures are our estimates
SeasonDatesNightly quoteMinimum
Low16 September to 19 December 2026USD 360 (IDR 6.5 jt)3 nights
Peak20 December 2026 to 10 January 2027USD 570 (IDR 10.2 jt)7 nights

The peak quote is about 1.6 times the low-season one and it asks for a longer stay. The low-season quote, USD 360 a night (about IDR 6.5 million (about AUD 521), our estimate), is a figure for one villa, not a price for surf villas as a group.[11]

Our rule

Book the villa nearest the break you will surf most, and price a scooter into the night.

The scooter licence page covers the licence.

Can you get around Uluwatu without a scooter?

Not easily. Uluwatu is not walkable between its areas, so you need a scooter or a private driver to reach each one.[2]

Arrange a driver for the return, or choose a base you can walk home from: rides can become hard to find after midnight near beach clubs, and after the temple's evening dance show you can wait ages or meet surge pricing.[14, 15]

Cars may not head west on Jalan Uluwatu towards the temple from the Baler Setra junction in Pecatu, from the afternoon until 22:00 WITA. Motorcycles can, and Badung made the scheme permanent in July 2026.[12, 13]

  • Which part the hotel is in, and whether it is past the Jalan Baler Setra junction.
  • How you get back from dinner before 22:00, when cars cannot pass the junction, and again after midnight.
  • Whether the hotel arranges a driver, and what it charges.
  • How you reach the part from the airport: see how to get to Uluwatu.

Our rule

Ask your hotel for a driver's number when you check in.

You will want it after the show, not before.

Is Airbnb a good way to book in Uluwatu?

Booking platforms stay legal, but the governor has asked Airbnb to remove unlicensed listings, so check a listing is licensed first.[16, 17]

Our rule

Ask the host for the listing's tourism licence before paying a deposit.

An unlicensed listing is the kind the governor has asked Airbnb to remove.

Which part of Uluwatu suits couples, families and long stays?

Bingin suits couples and confident walkers, Melasti and Ungasan suit honeymooners and luxury seekers, Balangan suits quiet trips and longer stays, Suluban suits surfers and sunset chasers, and Padang Padang suits first-time visitors.[1]

With small children, skip Bingin and count the steps elsewhere: Padang Padang is about 120 steps down and Bingin's are steep. In Ungasan, pick a resort with its own amenities, since the clifftop is remote.[4, 7, 8]

A month or more is a rental, not a hotel stay, and Where to live in Bali prices Uluwatu by the month.

Our rule

Ask any villa or hotel for its monthly rate before you price nights.

A monthly rate is a different price from thirty nights.
